How long do your coyote sets sit before they begin to produce ? Setting on good sign, it seems that its always 3-7 days before my sets are getting worked.

Other than spending less time putting in a set what can be done to "speed up" the process?

Keep in mind. Coyotes do not run the same route every night

2-7 days is that abnormal in my area. After I get the first few off a property I might not connect again for a month. Now I'm talking 30-70 acre properties scattered across my trapping area

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

I get action the first night or day typically. Maybe your sets could be in a different area? If you can find an edge to the coyote's territory and set a spot where they all leave their mark you should have pretty quick action. Just depends on where they are and if your set is under their nose when they pass through. Some sets produce a couple per week for months of they are on a good travel route.

Just passin through

Most are going in on two track roads in wooded areas. Fresh tracks at set locations. Rarely find scat but set it when I do.

Try to set intersections according to prevailing winds.

There is opinion, but no proof that I know of, that too much lure, before it ages, causes some coyote to stay back from sets. That coyote looong nose is a super sniffer.

As for wind, I prefer to set one trap downwind and one upwind to increase odds and to, hopefully, catch the mate.

IN Alabama . Lots of it depends on the property. I have places on 30000 acres were it takes 2 to 4 days to catch a coyote, when I set up.But I have a 6500 acre peice that I always catch first night own. Keep in mind = things change. Cutovers grow, logging crews move, and hogs are killed and dumped. IF your nabors trap, if its high traffic, the on flow of hunters scouting, AND many other thing in the south make it different. Just Be patient. Try not to disturb to much. Lots of trappers = move to much stuff around. Think natural. Set natural looking sets

Had a set connect last year after over a month out. Tbone had been rained on probably a dozen times. I honestly forgot about it until one day I was checking the sets and saw a coyote bouncing across the field.

My theory is, fresh sign 7-10 days old sign 1-3 days. If there is both fresh and old sign, your golden.. I leave sets in on travel corridors all season, some set idle for weeks then catch 3 days in a row. Keep records for you area, over time patterns will form.

KB, I am usually catching the first night, and it tapers off heavily after the first week. I can't tell for sure but from your pics it looks like you are off of the two track a good bit. I put sets as close to, if not under the sign if at all possible. Set the center of the road. Those are some good looking sets.

Maybe 1-3 feet off road, it varies. They are usually running the "ditch" on these roads. Thought about setting some blind sets but worried about them getting sanded over if we get a lot of rain. We've had no shortage of rain lately.

Great post. Sorry I can’t contribute anything, but I can learn. Already seeing some advice I can try this season. I trapped for removal May-July at a local plantation. Didn’t do too good, but didn’t do too bad after 35 years of being out of it. Like someone told me, I’m trapping ground that has been trapped for the last 15 years, I’m trapping when there is food available every 50 yards, and it’s not exactly the best trapping weather when your drenched in sweat after just one set. If you’re catching every 3-7 days then you are kicking butt in my opinion. Especially if you don’t have the numbers and it’s been previously trapped.

Sets went back to producing, caught 2 last night one off the urine post pictured above and the other off a dirt hole. Both were put in Saturday.

That is a tuff question. It depends on the time of year. Here I start around our firearms deer season. I might pick up a few just before the orange army hits after that it might be 2 weeks. I have also have had sets sit 4 weeks before they connect. I have learned to have patients with coyotes.

Lots of good advice here
On low numbers it can take while they have big territory,
Here for example 1 family group to a township 36 sections is about par.

I trap a lot of private ground that butts up against National Forest. The private ground has cows on it, so pee is pretty much worthless as the cows destroy everything. That said, If I find a good spot like the post set above, I'll hop the fence and make it on the NF side. Usually takes about 1 week before I see any action, but then it's hit and miss all season.
There is an old equipment shed in the corner of a hay field that the owners don't use anymore. I make dirt hole and step down sets around it and they produce every year. I suppose the coyotes visit that looking for mice.
There's plenty of ground around here so they pretty much go where they want to.
