Thinking about trapping a long stretch of slow creek that varies in size from 15-30 ft. Lots of bends, etc. Wondering if anyone on here has found a setup they like. Could be a 11 ft one man or a 13 two man. Thanks.

I use an old 10' aluminum flat bottom boat. I got it for $60.00 eight years ago.

For small water I use a kawartha canoe-14 foot.Strong fibreglass and fairly light.
If I am going to be loading and unloading onto the bike or truck many times in a day,a sportspal is what I use.A 12 foot is ideal but I have a 14 sportspal that works too.If you are covering longer distances alone, the sportspal doesn't paddle very well compared to a kawartha or similar. And don't forget just cause you are one man paddling you also need a canoe big enough for gear and fur.

Back long ago, I had quite a few canoes that I stashed at important locations. I have used all these alone for trapping. 17 foot aluminum worked great on most everywhere. I have owned quite a few.. Room for gear and animals. 12 foot fiberglass I owned a few of these that were cheap and very poorly designed - deathtraps. 10 foot smoker craft was one of my favorites. Slow because of the shape, but light and ultra handy. 16 foot Old Town Camper Model is very good for most things. Currently my only canoe, so it is my favorite.

Love my Golden hawk 10 footer. Only weights 50 pounds and has a good keel on it to keep it straight in the water. Plus it's more stabil than most canoes and I often times stand up in it to better see the banks

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine!

Same as Newt.just purchased Old Town Stillwater 12. Plan on using this until I get the 17 foot canoe I want.

I use a 15' fiberglas one for ponds around here and a 16' aluminum one for creeks. The aluminum one is bigger and heavier but I can walk in it without tipping it over. I set up my traps and stakes so I don't have to get out to set them. It helps to put some foam in the bottom for your knees and keep a watertight bag with some gorilla tape in case you run something through the bottom of it. I don't carry much more than extra traps paddle and a few tools. I like a short rope on the front and long on about 20' on the back so if I do get out I clip it on my belt so I don't lose the canoe. It's nice to slide the canoe back and forth to get my tools and traps while setting them. It might be a pain to get it to and from the water but it is worth it when you need it. I keep the traps and gear in the middle and put the fur in the front. All the water seams to drain to me no matter what I do so I always have something to scoop water with. Great way t trap, you can haul lots of fur almost effortlessly.

Just passin through

I trap the Allegheny River and have for the past 20-30 yrs. I have both canoes and kayaks. I have a 15' Michicraft aluminum and a few Old Town Predator kayaks. Both 12' and 14'. And did have a loon 14' until someone stole it. I like setting the line with my canoe as it can haul the weight better and holds up better as I beach it onto the rocky shoreline. But after that first day I run my 14' oldtown. 2x as fast and 14' makes it very stable. I hunt and shoot geese and ducks shooting sideways without thinking about it. Anyhow back to trapping aspect. I can easily carry 20+ coon and 6 dozen traps in my kayaks. My 14' is mostly open as is a loon. Easy in and out. Kayaks under 11 feet start to get tippy as related to trapping. I am buying and Old Town Next kayak this fall to try on the trapping line. It is light 12' and open just like a canoe. Seat in the middle but expensive. Got a deal about 1/2 off, because I know someone.(I just got it like that) LOL All in all they both have a use on a water line. Make sure its wide enough for stability no matter what you buy. Wide cuts down on speed and maybe turning, but can go into shallower water. Good luck this year in whatever you pick... JD

I have a Native brand 14.5' Ultimate kayak. It is different from most kayaks as it is a sort of tunnel style hull. It is very stable in the water, tracks good, carries a second person and/or tons of gear with ease. I water tested many and found this to be the most comfortable of all of the kayaks when I was shopping. The seat is slightly elevated so you are not sitting flat on the floor like some. The seat is fine mesh, has a nice supportive and adjustable back rest. This kayak was $925 when bought new years ago.

I picked up this old beat up 14 ft sportspal a couple months ago for 50 bucks.Great for the small water and doesn't leak a drop.Light enough to throw in and out of the truck all day doing nuisance beaver work and packs a good pile of traps and beaver when needed.
