Many different things can be used for covers. I like coffee filters. Others use wax paper, wire screen, landscape cloth. Others use poly fill under the pan. I have used pipe insulation under pan with good results. Just find what works best for you.

Tighten your pan so it will not freely fall then a little more so when it is set it it hard to push down. I shoot for about 3/4 lbs of pressure to make it go off. A fox may still get caught but he would have to jump on your trap.
Waxed paper is a good pan cover. Check your traps early in the morning around dawn.

Just passin through

As Larry stated, set the pan tension for 3-4 pounds by tightening the pan bolt. Weigh a tool that weighs 3 or so pounds and place it on the center of the pan. With a big Pan like with the Bridgers just use polly fill under the pan.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

4.5 lbs does a pretty good job of keeping fox out , and catch every coyote that sticks foot on the pan for me.
But I will say my double front foot fox catch has went way up .

LOL, at least they ain't getting away LOL.. Here any time I get over 3 pounds I have fox tracks on pans, but my red fox males peak weight is 12-14. Females 8. I would think in Kentucky they should be about the same.

Pipe insulation is 1/2in fiberglass that is wrapped around pipes to prevent freezing. Cut into squares and put under the pan to keep dirt from allowing the pan to drop. I have used this with good luck.

I have Sheldon's #3 Bridger dogless setters and they work perfectly. They are custom made for each size trap. He just needs to know if they are four coiled or not.
