I知 sure this has been brought up before but here goes. I was recently asked to predator trap a high fence deer ranch in my area. I知 not new to predator trapping but I have never trapped around a really really high population of deer. On the grand tour a lot of the deer seemed to be really curious as to what we were doing .
My question - Should I worry about catching a deer and holding it in a Duke#3 size trap. All traps will be anchored with wolf fang earth anchors. It is my knowledge that a deer will kick out of steel trap. A lot of the deer out there are younger deer. Please advise.

I held a deer long enough in a number 3 Bridger for it to open up S hooks before it pulled out. Most of the time they seem to pull out pretty easy though.

The only time you need to worry about it is, May - August. Mostly in May and June when the fawns hit the ground. If you hit the coyotes hard in Jan, Feb and March, it puts a hurting to them the rest of the year. The deer just pull their legs out of the trap.
During the summer months, you can set snares where they dig under the high fence.

And urines...avoid using urines as attractors, deer seem to like to check out sets with urines as attractors.
Most adult deer will pull out of standard traps fairly easily.

You might try step down dirt hole sets for coyotes. I've only started using them last year but they seem to be deadly on coyotes but livestock and deer seem hesitant to step down in the trench. From what I've read cats dont like to step down in the trench either so might not be the best if targeting cats too.

I was running my line one season and seen 4 full grown deer go along a fence line and where one of the 2 up front went was in my set with a #3 4x4 bridger with cross stake. The deer when it hit that trap It went up high enough to take the trap off and then run. The other was looking around to see what was going on. It was some thing to watch.I had found traps that was sprung by deer. That was the first time to see it and the end of what happened. Also like jabNE stated to avoid using urines or any salt they will work your set if you know there is alot around the area. They want the sodium .

Place a pile of corn or some other deer attractant 20 yards from your set.

If you have some handy trees or shrubs near your sets, you can fence off your sets with tie wire. Place it above the standing height of your coyotes and you'll be good to go.

Know this seems a bit on the stupid side.
But this guy tells me he uses old tires as coyote sets He places the bait Inside the tire and places his trap or traps out side the tire. He says those tires have great eye appeal. I'm betting a deer would never get close enough to the tire to get caught.

I made that tire set last year out curiosity and caught on it had lots of deer coming into a windmill and coyotes too so i thought id try it . I put the trap in the middle of the tire and a mouse bait smeared on inside upper bead of tire with a big grass wad for eye appeal inside . It turned out a first night catch that sure surprised me .

I've used that tire set. It worked on one coyote anyway. I worked out on the beach one summer, was following a set of coyote tracks down the surf line (they checked it most nights for washed up fish, etc) when all of a sudden those tracks took a 90 degree hard turn. That coyote beelined for an old tire at least 75 yards away as soon as he could have spotted it, marked it, and headed right back to the surf.

I had try the tire set years ago and only got possums. But for about the beach one for what they did. That would work good for the river bed on sand bars.Use the tire as a drag then for how it sounds. But would it be best to bed the trap out side the tire then in the middle? I done the middle when I use it.

Never thought about using it anywhere but when I was trying to avoid livestock, so I always set in the middle. Be hard to control their approach setting on the outside I would think.

I can see it being great for eye appeal. Especially In the winter. Then of coarse you could use the tire as a drag.
This guy said he set the trap outside the tire. I guess If you gave a certain spot on the tire A shot of pee or lure It would act like a pee post.

Ha boco I'm not that ambitious! I didn't move those tires 50feet.

You "should" be OK with that size trap. I don't use traps that large because if you nip "Godzilla" and he comes up gimpy or you tether a breeder doe, they'll be sure and open the main gate for you as you leave. I have two high fence contracts where Duke #4's were used by the "previous" trappers.

MB550 os holds em for about 2 seconds....Ounce the hit the end of the chain they'r out.. All ages. Bed the trap as close as you can get it and very few deer fire the trap.
