Here is how it is wrote in the Iowa hand book when I took the furharvesting course when I cam into the state to know what the laws are of the state.
Foothold and leghold trap
No person shall set or mantain on land any foothold or leghold trap with metal serrated jaws, metal toothed jaws or a spread inside the set jaws of greater then seven inches.
For how it is wrote that the jaws that are set to get the measurment.

That place in TX is really pricey though. I'd look at shows for uses ones, or have rednecktrapper weld teeth on a trap for you.

to the outside edge.

... which means they are legal for use in water.

Traps with serrations are illigal in Michigan, for land or water. They don't get it! wouldn't take much of a serration to keep the foot in place.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

I was at the furbearer meeting that winter where the DNR was pressuring the associations to give their blessing to an all out ban.I wanted to know why the ban couldn't be limited to land sets only;nope, they wanted an all out ban. We'll never get them back now. This was portrayed as something the assoc.'s got together on and pushed for better P.R.with the public. Not true.

Yeah, they shouldn't have agreed to give them up Zandra. Someone once tried to argue that with teethed beaver traps in Wi. I shook my head. Their thought was it would help appease the anti's. No joke. It was even mentioned in our state trapping magazine a couple years ago.

If the DNR would have done their homwork, they would have seen the advantage. The word teeth should not have been used, traction nodules would be more accurate.
Thanks for the info Buck.
