I'm setting up a fur shed and looking for some layout ideas. My space is limited like 6'x8'and I have a full size fridge in it so fleshing beam ideals , fur storage , heating , skinning gambrel any pictures of layout would be helpful.

6x8 is pretty small.

I know but thats all I have I wish I had a 12x24 but thats out of my budget this season. I might end up fleshing out side in the cold again and just skin and hang fur in the shed

How high of a ceiling do you have or can make? You can save a lot of floor space with a high ceiling.

I only have about 7ft, the sheds a extension off another garden shed. It was a feed shed for the farm and pretty well sealed I working on insulating it. I don't run a very big line so I can freeze what I don't have room to stretch.

You'll need to keep it well organized, but I bet you can get it done. Think about a folding up beam and high shelving.

You will have to do one job at a time,like all the skinning then when that is done and those tools and equipment is out of the way,then fleshing.Then after that get out the stretchers etc and do the boarding.Good organization will be key,and doing one job at a time.Also you wont be able to do big numbers at once,you will have to process as you go.
What species will you be doing?

I have a 8x8 she'd and I don't use it much. It's more for storage due to the no room issue. I used to just skin in it and then flesh and stretch in the basement but now I do most all of my work in the basement. I'm hoping to build a new shed for next season and it will be 12x24 or 16x24.

I have same space issue. Is it possible for you to set up a skinning area outside, then reserve your indoor space for fleshing, stretching and drying? I have my area for fleshing, stretching and drying in a corner of our garage and then utilize the area under my back deck in the back of the house for skinning. Just trying to add ideas.

i will be having the same issue this season. 6X12, Ive set up my forming boards at one end on ceiling attachement. Have 2 small work tables, an area to flesh, and just enough room for critters to thaw. I may try and skin them in the same area, if not it will have to be outside. no big numbers of critters wich should work out. but if i get a stroke of luck and catch lots, i may be in trouble for space.
We just have to make due with what we have i suppose.

Just noting 6 by 8 is 72 inches by 96 inches.

Your problem is the fridge, the door will have to open to the outside as there is not room inside, the fleshing beam anywhere but the center where you will be tripping over it to get to the fridge as you have to skin in the center or your walls will be covered in blood and gore, and you will find new ways to cuss for banging your elbows.

The advice on high ceilings is right, but that is just part as you will need a double 2 by 6 to skin off of, or your rig will eventually warp or break less lumber.
Forget doing things outside. Great dream, until you get rain, ice, snow, fog with 40 mph winds for a week.

Heat, only practical heat is propane, usually a Mr Heater, so do not gas yourself, burn yourself or singe your fur as the back corner the heater is in will be on top of you as you try to skin in a 6 by 8 foot room.


This is for an 8 x 12 fur shed. I would 2 x 4 construction or pallets for the walls. Use star screws and clamps. Put on good paper which is white for reflecting, then tin it, again with screws and pre drill the holes like a pole shed. 9 foot minimum on the ceiling and where the double 2 x 6's for the skinning rig are, or else it will be too low and your back will be screaming and as you have fur on the floor making you slip, you will cut your hands.

I would suggest looking for some used rubber roofing from a contractor for the floor. It makes cleaning things easy.

I would insulate in the future and cover with chip board as plaster board will not hold up.

If I could suggest something better, might be an old pull camper someone junked.

Basically that's what I had in mind it's already 3/4 insulated . I have a couple bigger pieces of laminent flooring for the floor . My biggest problem is fur storage I can store my trapping equipment in my shop ( before someone makes a comment my shop is baraly good enough to store my tools let alone fur ) I could use some idea about fleshing beams , mounting systems , dimensions and the such wrather not use gas heat makes me nervice . It should be insulated with R19 I thought maybe I could use infrared heater I already have

can you put the frig out side sitting on a pallet or bricks? If you was close id give you a mini frig! I mounted it on a shelf. then I had room under it for a fleshing beam! You just don't want to have a beer party while your fleshing !Unless your into concussions
