Alright guys this has probably been answered but i couldnt find what i was looking for so i got a pretty simple question. This is my first time attempting bait making andi was wondering if i could just grind up deer meat and mix a bunch of salt in it and if that would last a season fine, it doesnt need to last forever just a few months. thanks for your help i have never done this and i just want to keep it simple

Salt would work for that. Even if it does taint a bit over those couple of month it won't be all bad.

You could even skip the salt, as it gets colder outside the taint will help

Don’t skip the salt unless you want more taint ! Half cup of salt ( canning salt ) in a gallon of bait , will do a good job of preserving it but won’t stop the eventual mold . If you have left overs put it in the freezer for next year !

a lot of your commercial baits are aged a lot longer than a couple months.

Hard to go wrong with deer. I try and have 2 gallons of fresh deer ground to start my season every year. I let it taint on the carcass. Then add 1/2 cup of salt per gallon not enough to preserve. But slows it to the point of it wont turn to mush. As golfball stated just freeze it after season is over. Add any oils you like. Me I like skunk and sac oil and veg table oil. 2 gallons of bait for the cost of electricity to run the grinder.
