I keep track of the sets: 4) 3v-DDH-wid-pro-cc/and-n-gate tee That reads set #4 with #3 victor longspring-double dirt hole-widowmaker bait(in one hole)-pros choice(down other hole)-canine call as call lure-anderson north at the road tee where the gate is. I write on the right side of the notebook, the left side gets notes pertaining to the set(ex. #4 coyote - walk throuh-bb & Weas) that is caught a coyote remade with a walk through with Backbreaker and lenons weasel lure. Gotta make a system that works for you.

I have to submit a season end report, and with three separate lines, and separate reports needed, keeping it all organized and recorded is key. I just write down what I caught and how many for each line at the end of each day. Nothing fancy, just date, critter, and how many. I will also write down any oddities. I can't possibly get any more fancy than that because if I do a night check in the boat, I will be running thirty or so miles in the dark, it's either raining or snowing, and with a boat load of critters I just count what comes out of the boat or sled. I am not taking the time to record each detail of each set or lure. If you do, awesome, but I don't bother.

I keep short notes in a note book for set type, and attractor/s More detailed for test stuff.

I don't ever keep a log of what kind of sets or bait or lure I used. But I do have a legal tablet on my dash with several pens. As soon as I make a set or hang some snares I write it down. I don't want to leave a trap or snare working and forget about it. Not good for someone else to see a critter caught for several days in a trap you forgot about.

Perhaps with me it's nothing more than advancing age and forgetfulness. I agree with CatMan. Can't have a snare or trap out there for others to see, or wasting resources. My log (journal) of each day takes only a minute of my time at each stop. I use several different lures, so what each trap is lured with is noted, along with set type, trap type, etc. When it's time to re-lure each set, real easy to go with the same stinkum. I never mix 'em up. At the end of the season, I go through the log book in detail and figure out what exact lure did the job, which one pulled in deer and other nontargets, and which one caught coyotes and foxes. Ain't looking for nontargets. If you're running more than a handful of sets (especially at my age), remembering which lure becomes impossible without the notes. Wouldn't consider not keeping these notes. At the end of the year, after going through the notes, I usually introduce a new lure and toss whatever doesn't pass muster for the next year. To me, a no brainer...

I draw a picture of the area that I am setting traps. Mark where my traps are. I make a note as to what type of set and what lure/bait I used. On another page I start my log. Basically I just write down what I caught and any observations that I made for that day. Helps keep track of the spots that are working and those that are not. Also helps to keep track of where my traps are. Helps me keep traps were the critters are and shows areas that are not producing. I try to write things down as I go but the weather can make it wait till I am done checking. I check on the 4 wheeler and only run about 2 dozen traps plus dp's. Takes a little time when setting but very little once you are just checking. Just note the set that made a catch and the remake. I also note when I relure or rebait a set.

If you have time to take notes, writing all that crap down..you’re not trapping hard enough. Not quite sure what you mean, but if i am runnin 150 traps, i gotta write somethin down to remember all of them. I use my own shorthand(as posted above) and can write down set notes in 6 seconds. 150 traps = 900 seconds, thats 15 minutes of trap set recording. I would spend more than 15 minutes wondering where my traps were.

I ran 60-100...I have a good memory. Now if I was running river line that would be different. Never used just 12 traps...
