Is using a 220 H stand as a stake for coon good enough ? I'm trying to lighten my load on my foot line and those rebar stakes and hammer add up. -Thanks

IMO for Coon yea they would work probably 98% of time. Assuming a 220 on an H stand is on a trail i would not run the risk of a large non target animal or the other 2% getting off with my equipment. I know how you feel about trying to scale back on the weight load. You can make a PILE of cable extensions cheap say 3/32 cable with hammered ferrules quick and easy. Again IMO.

I agree with Carl. Always stake for the largest animal you could ever possibly encounter. I once had a coyote print an inch away from my 1.5 cs set for mink and coon that was wired off to a limb and that was the last day I ever used wire. Now I roll with 3/32 cable and sleep a little better knowing I won't have a coyote running around with a trap on his foot. Also JMO.

All my H stands have a stake welded to them. I use 3/8ths re bar and just weld It In the center of the stand. Most stands have to horizontal stiffeners. Just weld your stake to both of them. Leave enough stake above the top stiffener so you can drive It with your beater.
I cut off the two legs on the H stand so they are about 6" long. The legs go Into the ground just deep enough to keep the stand from turning. And The 6" Is a gauge for me. I have found that a height of about 5" off the ground Is what works for me.

A single stake Or stabilizer Is a lot easier to get In to the ground then 2 or 3 legs. I always found when I used the stock legs on the H stand that One leg would always find a root or a rock. A single leg Is a lot more trapper friendly.

Although I don't use the h-stands when I trap in the bush, what the beav says is spot on.I used them a lot trapping nuisance beaver on the RR and in areas with a lot of rock they were a pain trying to get the two prongs in without one finding a rock.

The single re-bar stake is a great idea.It will also keep you from leaving them behind accidentally if your trap is staked with it.

For me I always tie off my 220 to something solid and use the H stand as is.When the animal get caught in the trap it will take the trap off the stand and then it will be tie off the trail away from the run or trail.I have not had problems with this set up and also had caught beaver this way also and other animals.

Just Carry a Small Roll of Tie wire in your Pocket.
Wire them off to be safe. You hip catch something and you will be looking for your traps.

No always stake ot tie off your trap. I'm going to make some stakealizer type stands 26" long so I can stake and support all in one.

I agree with the rest, stake your trap solid. Learned the hard way when a wandering dog 3/4 mile from home stepped through the trap and took it home with him.
