Trapper Ron and Carl78,around here Whitewood is Poplar,I make mine out of White Pine . Very soft for push pins. As soft as basswood. Yellow pine is harder wood. I own a sawmill so I just pick out all the knotfree boards for my stretchers.

Got four Otter Boards made from Whitewood yesterday. This stuff is as soft or softer than my Freedom Brand Basswood Coon Stretchers.

basswood does not have any pitch and it's soft and easy to work with.my personal choice, did make a few form white pine when I started and still use them, but basswood is better.
