Hope everyone had a good summer and fall. I've been in the bush guiding pretty much full time since May, so haven't been on here much. Our summer was hot and dry with lots of fires all around us, but our fishing lodge and trapline were untouched. Summer fishing was outstanding with some real big fish caught. The highlight happened early in June when my son had two clients o the upper lake and they caught and released 97 lake trout in about 6 hours of fishing.

Fall hunting season was COLD! Coldest I've seen since 92. Right from the beginning it was freezing. I did 5 hunts once again for Ceaser Lake Outfitters. This was my 34th year guiding hunters and I must say moose quarters are getting harder to handle. Im getting the itch to do more hunting for myself so will be slowing down on the guiding hunters end of things real soon. We had a good season despite the cold, Ceaser Lake took 8 grizzlies overall and I was lucky enough to guide hunters to two of them. My son and son-in-law also guide for Ceaser Lake, and they both took bears as well. My son took two, and my son-in-law took one really good one. He caught it chasing a cow and calf moose. My son took the biggest moose of the year, it scored 223 and change. On the second hunt I had a bowhunter I have guided many times in the past. He has been chasing grizzly on all those hunts and we finally got it done this year. Anyway here are a few pictures.
Hopefully others here on the Wilderness forum will share their summer/fall pictures. I've been keeping up with JR. Temple, and northway, privately and know they have had a lot of fun. Trapping season is just around the corner, and judging from the sign I've seen there is going to be a lot of lynx again. Cant wait to see how Ryan does with them. My youngest daughter and her husband bought a remote line right next to mine and just flew out last week. They plan to spend the winter out there so hopefully prices are ok. I've got a full slate of trapline clients coming up again this year and even a couple from Europe. Hope everyone has a good season!

Thanks Boco. My son in law was guiding over on the Beaver river where Robert traps. He got his big bear just downstream from Roberts cabin so that will be some good bait for Robert! They got weathered in there on the last hunt for almost a week so they took their hunters over to Robert and he took them on a beaver trapping expedition, they really enjoyed that and Robert had fun doing it.

No he isn't. He went in early and wants to concentrate on trapping since he did so well last year. He has a great line and is really developing it more every year.

Yea,makes sense,he told me last year he has a lot of good country and needs to clear old trails into it.
Kind of funny,he told me one reason he sold his line on the Quebec border was that a lot of his trails needed work.

Some nice looking animals. The jack fish in the clear water looks cool. Most of the delta water looks like chocolate milk until just before freeze up. I’ll have another 100 3/32 snares so I’m looking forward to a busy winter.

No, we were having breakfast and he howled right in front of the cabin. Stepped out and shot him then finished breakfast. We had killed a grizzly near the cabin and think he had found the carcass. Rifle is a Ruger Compact in 338 RCM. Fast becoming my favourite rifle.

Hi Jeff>
is it true that the older bulls like in the pic with the moose and bow hunter usual start having the hons ride lower on the head as in the pic. I've seen quite a few like that or is it just genetics?

Ron, I my experience....as moose get bigger, the main beam starts to get a downward angle right after it comes off the head. It isn't foolproof but I usually figure and bull with a bit of droop is at least 60". I'm sure some of the pro hunters on here can give you a better answer

I'm not sure if the horns riding lower on the head indicates age or not. I always judge age by the size / shape of the bases, and the points. An older bull will have heavy gnarly looking bases, and the points will be shorter. The tops of the palms will start to round offhand have very short points. Here are a couple of examples. The first bull is older, you can see he has very few points on top of the palms. The second bull is in his prime.

One thing I was always told was the blacker the moose the more fat is has. It seems to be a dependable sign so far.
Just a cool thing to mention too is that my grandpa called last night and said him and grandma listened to wolves howling right from their bedroom a couple nights ago.

An Cree elder told me the same thing Ryan, and it sure does seem to be true. I think the real dark ones might be younger so that could explain why they are in better shape. Dang wolves are everywhere this year. My son has 4 already, and missed another 5 yesterday when a pack came in to the area where he killed a moose earlier. We had freezing rain and all his cam locs froze up!
