How do you utalize the ring on the end of the trap? Such as Victor's. Also some traps have a wedge attached to the ring. What is that used for? Just curious I could see running the chain through the loop and running a stick in for small animal drowning or somthing but what I cant figure out is why you would want that big ring on a #2 on dry land trapping.

These days people just cut the rings off and put a trap swivel on. The wedges were used as nails to attach logs to act as drags.

Back in the day you used the wedge for fastening like SniperBBB mentioned and often more useful between the jaws for dying and waxing traps

Back before re bar we used a tapered hard wood stake. Actually they held better then Re bar.

When water trapping we always cut forked limbs just below the fork -one long tine, one short. Turned upside down with the long tine shoved through the ring made a great stake. Never trusted the wedge and you would bend the heck out of the ring removing one from the log ( used staples).

Rubee,
Thanks for the 1980 Flash Back… I remember pre-cutting a lot of those limbs and fence staples went in easy and came out hard. Great Memories.
