Hey all,

Could anyone shed some light on this setup? I seem to recall seeing an ad somewhere for a B&L drag that looked very similar. Could this set up be factory? Value would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

-Nate

I am not sure of the date but these photos are from two catalogs, I think from the 1930's. One shows the drag and the other shows the #40 as a Beaver trap, with and with out teeth.

The chain looks a lot longer than a standard #40. It could possibly be a factory set up.

The chain is 4 ft long but everything on it seems to be original to me. The only thing that seems funny is the s hook attached to the drag, it doesn't quite match up.

Odd setup for sure. Beaver trap with a long chain and grapple?? Interesting if someone comes up with an offering in a catalog for special order like that. Seems more likely to me that it was assembled by a trapper or collector.

I had 18 factory long chain #40 Blake & lamb traps at one time and I believe they were ordered through Hawbakers(not by me).

So the chain could be original, and the drag just added? That's what I was thinking... I'd say the patina supports that for sure.

No doubt the long chain is original and the drag, also Blake & Lamb was purchased as an accessory and added by the trapper. Not all beaver traps were used for beaver. Hawbaker sold lots of traps back in the day and the manufacturers honored specific orders. I once had a riveted pan 91 1/2 newhouse with a very long factory chain that was bought from hawbaker.

I think your bottom catalog with the #40 is from the 50's
