Went and did some scouting yesterday. Driving down the road I seen a dirt pile in field. Caught my eye why wouldn't it catch coyote? I'm not a coyote trapper by any means at all! So would you all set it up or let it go?

I wish I could set one on the dirt mound.
Pa rules,5 feet from burrow entrance.
I set 10 feet up wind. Best fox location I have ever found.
Don't have many yotes and like it that way.

My area, every Fox & Coyote knows where the Groundhog holes are.
Check 'em out, You will find Canine dropping there.
I do set the holes that stand out as you described, s-o-g. Easily checked with binos.

I had many ride-a-long folks with me ask, how did you catch that Fox/Coyote in the middle of the field?
Answer- dirtholes made very near a Groundhog hole

Behind our local Mall...

No farm lane, GH hole in the middle of nowhere...

Here's an every year GH hole I set. Was really blown out when pre-season scouting.

When season opened, I set nearby...

After a week, no more catches. But GH dens were fresh dug & worked. I have no clue why I didn't catch more here.
So I made two more dirtholes on down the corn row, in line with GH hole, 60-70 yards away.
These sets caught ten more Reds near the GH hole.
Same GH hole on top on rise, dark spot in line with end of trees...

I've set both the GH hole itself and made sets nearby with success. The hole and dug dirt is attractive in itself, plus food opportunities from within the hole.
The dirt patterns in front of GH holes here always have a set of canine tracks or two in the dirt. Drooping a nearby and sometimes fresh digging.
Set those when you find them. Great post.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

This is actually one of my go to sets when it's raining and wet alot. Trench sets an level dirt holes flood out to easy. So I dig out a good size hole and mound up the dirt some that covers the front of the hole, then bed the trap on the mound as it keeps the trap high and dry. You have to dig the hole on a pretty steep angle though.
