Muskrat. What reasons did your DNR give you for not getting access crossings from the railroad for all the inaccessible lands?

We always hunted rabbits on RR land and never had a problem.Heck we waved too them as they went by and had a warden do a lic check one time.

DNR has nothing to do with it. It's in the hands of the RR.

Jail time or the crossing? LOl

I think what we need to do Is get about 100 outdoorsmen and get news coverage as we walk back and forth across the tracks. And see what happens.
I think It would be the perfect protest.

I used to walk the tracks to get to some beaver colonies, always waved at me and really lit up when they saw me with beaver. But then a guy not too far down those same tracks that owned a camp next to the tracks got in hot water over crossing the tracks with his truck, never mind they'd been doing it for years. The rr had him park on the shoulder of the road(U.S.2)and walk over the tracks.I always thought it was illegal to park on the shoulder of the road for extended periods of time.I guess if the LEO's enforced that he'd be totally screwed.I used to watch those guys when they'd come for deer season carrying all their gear over the tracks into the cabin, trucks parked along the hi-way.Guess it all depends on who see's you and if they want to make an issue out of it.

We road the tracks On the wheelers In Ontario. Looking for this abandon town called Nedrey(sp). We made It to the town looked around my buddy was looking for these old hit and miss engines. We were all staged to get back on the tracks when the train came around the corner. We were darn lucky there were a lot of rock cuts on the way back. If we would have met the train In one of those we might have been history. Never road the tracks after that.

The railroad used to hire local trappers to catch nuisance beaver, and pay them. But they would not give them permission to travel the right of way.The trapper would have to acess the problem spots same way he acess beaver in the bush, make trails or paddle in etc.
One day the trapper was riding his 4 wheel bike between the rails when a fast freight came around the corner. He didn't have time to get the bike off,and it got demolished. He tried to get the railroad to come good for a new bike, since he was trapping nuisance beaver for the railway.
The railroad did not pay for his bike, and after that incident, they got together with the Union and created a permanent beaver control 4-man and man position. The job was open for bid like any other railroad job, with the senior applicant getting the position. The job requirements was railroad rules qualified, and a current Ontario trapping licence.

Best job I ever had with the railroad.

So let me get this straight. The railroad thinks it is to expensive to put crossings for you to cross their property where you need to access the public ground. You say it is not your DNR's or Fish and Game's duty to get this access. I would think that the money they take in from sportsman could, would be well spent providing access for it's sportsmen(paying for the crossings).
Am I looking at this wrong? I don't think I would take it very well if I was forced to provide access across my private property, had to pay for the roadway, and gain certain liabilities with no incentive to me other than garbage clean up. Part of the incentive of owning property is I am able to govern how it is used.
Your DNR funds public access on private lands so it is certainly plausible they will fund sportsman access crossings through RR property. That is part of what the fees we pay them are for. Just have them work with the RR to put in walk over bridges or road crossings where needed so everyone is happy. As passionate as you sound about this i think you will be very pleased with getting this done.
I never thought forcing someone to give up their legal rights because it benefited me was a good idea.
Bob

It would be foolish to chance catching a record for pushing an issue where you could be legally locked up for just standing on the tracks. For those who encourage acts like this, just make sure those individuals are on the tracks with you smile

At this point in my life, I could give a rat's arse about a record. My criminal history begins and ends in Arizona in 1974 when I picked up two fellas on my Harley who had run out of gas. Got a ticket for three on a motorcycle. They split the ticket and bought me dinner.

To make it clear, I'm not "just standing" on the tracks. I'm crossing at a brisk walk to access public lands and waters that are now inaccessible.

I'll take the jail time.

hmmm Interesting train of thought. What would happen if trappers and hunters started to do their own thing regarding taking animals and disregarding trap laws regarding traps being used? Some trappers feel that a lot of these laws are useless.....except the ticket and use the traps or take animals knowing they are breaking the law? Take the jail time? wha....wha
