Disclosure: I am NOT a beaver trapper.

So, with that said, has anyone figured out a way to snare beaver on dry ground without causing damage? I'm just looking to set crossovers and slides, stay dry and keep rolling on. This will be on public ground, so I would prefer to not use traps for an animal that's not worth a whole lot already and have 20% of them stolen.

If this is unrealistic, does snare damage amount to much profit loss with the market after put up? I appreciate any experience you guys are willing to share.

Perhaps use a 10' pole hooked up to a drowner.

Yeah, I wondered if I would need to put them on a drowning rig or just deal with the damage. Some of the places are too shallow to drown, though. I appreciate the advice, AJE.

lil damage if you pull hide extra at snare marks to disperse “bruised” area. Like Newt shows in his videos.

Set fast loaded snares, with aggressive locks, like cam locks, use a 7" loop set 4" off the ground, with a good SOLID support wire (#9), and you'll neck snare almost every beaver you catch.

Anchor your snare high in no tangle situations. Less leverage, less damage.

I really appreciate all the responses. So it sounds like, I need a fast snare with a slightly smaller loop than is typically used and set a little higher off the ground for a neck catch. Then also anchor it high up a stake without allowing much movement or any entanglement incase of a body catch.

Would a kill pole be a good snare support if the snare swivels around the catch pole? Or is the swivel really necessary? What do your guys' dry ground snare systems look like? Speed is pretty important as these will be run before work.

Again, I really appreciate all the info.

Always run a swivel...you can almost reuse a beaver snare if you use a cable if it werent for the kink behind the lock.

I use 4' killpoles to support my snares out of water. They stick up about a foot to 18" above ground. I don't use swivels, just let them wrap around the pole if they aren't dispatched by the snare.

Most all Beavers are now sold as hatters. Hatters are sold by the pound.

Can't help you. Illegal to set on dry land in my state.

ADC, so what you're doing is basically "coyote snaring" the beaver? Or is there something I'm still missing? I always heard and read that snaring causes damage unless they drown. But it sounds like I might have made this more complicated than necessary. Thanks again to everyone that replied.

I had three dry land snared beaver today . Two were alive and one had been killed by something but not
eaten. One of the others had some damage on his back and where the snare may have been. Does anyone here know if the snare can cause a bloodshot area that looks like an external
wound but it is only on the inside of the hide?

You have no fur market for your beaver, except the hatter market (like Newt said). So you don't have to worry bout damage as they pay by the pound.

You can get away with a lot in the hatter beaver market - they don't really care about damage, just how much fur they can shear off the hide. My highest selling beaver at auction last year all graded DMG III and had holes in them that I didn't bother to sew or even really close up.

Any damage on a decent beaver pelt in todays market drastically reduces the price.
A 40 dollar beaver will be a 15 dollar beaver if it has dmg.

not legal to use body grippers? You use snares and you will get some damage, unless you can neck snare them and they expire right away. So X2 on no entanglement and anchor them high so the snare cannot reach the ground. JMO

I can honestly say in the hundreds of beaver Ive caught n my life, nearly all were snared on the bank on land.
I can't swim and that is how I learned to trap beaver when I was a kid. I wasn't strong enough to set big beaver traps either.
Man I have piled up a lot of beaver just cutting a slot at edge of water and making artificial castor mounds with snares. Slides, trails, dam crossovers, narrow channels and little feeder creeks.
For summer acreage damage jobs with kids and pets around, can't beat snares for safety and efficiency. Got my self more coon and coyote trapping access just by snaring a landowners problem beaver than I can even count.
I'm a big fan of snares for beaver and great way to teach kids how to trap beaver too.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
