Doesn't seem to be the case here. There are some studies that suggest the wolf population had suppressed the coyote averages since the mid 1990's. Any Cass county trappers who can provide insight?

For there to be studies or data someone in DNR Wildlife would have to care. Trapper observations in neighboring Beltrami County would suggest that wolves are having localized affects on coyote numbers. Some of my better coyote locations go cold when wolves are in the vicinity.

WE are doing coyote studies here In WI. But It has something to do with CWD. But I'm sure It could relate to coyote populations.
Last year we killed 15 coyotes off of 3 farms and the distance between those 3 farms was less then 3 miles. And we didn't get them all.

My property is on the Cass/Wadena county line. I am on the south edge of the wolf range and the north edge of cattle country near Nimrod, MN. We have plenty of coyotes and bobcat around. We do get spring wolf movements during the spring calving season, although this fall we are getting cam pics of a male wolf that seems to be hanging around. A rancher just south of me snared 35 coyotes in 30 days the winter before last on his nearly 3 sections of land. Didn't hear how he did last year, but I'm getting plenty of trail cam pics of them this year.

Well, where I am trapping in central Cass, my catch rate is 2 wolves to each coyote. It is a challenge to let those big boys go. I have learned a couple things...wolves are no harder to catch then coyote and the Bbridger #3 DL
is a really well made trap. My having laminated the trap, spot welding the base plates and added MB crunch sweval mid point probably helps. Hopefully MN will one day reopen the wolf season

That modified Bridger sounds like a good wolf trap, but I use old style 1.75 victors with #2 music wire springs exclusively on my coyote line and I am holding the big boys too! There's little doubt that the presence of Wolves in some areas has put the run on the coyotes.

I was finally able to connect with the DNR wildlife biologist for the region. While they do no do population studies on coyotes, he thinks the area I trap in (old Grade Rd) is better wolf country due to the heavy timber in the area. He suggests I look a bit further south where the area starts to open up in a mix of fields and woods. Beav: Where you trap in WI is it heavily wooded or more the mix as he suggests? Thanks

I used to have a place in the longville area. The wolves rebounding put the hurt on coyotes big time. Last I was in that area they were getting more coyotes down towards serpent lake area/ northern crow wing county. This was in the 90s.

Thanks for your response Osky. I bought my property (Long Lake #2) in the early 90,s. Back then in October we used to hear large numbers of coyote s howling at night. Now there seems to be none of that, nor due any of my neighbors, who are full time residents report hearing them. I catch gray fox, red Fox and this year an increasing number of wolves; but only a few coyotes.

Just my opinion but coyotes hold their own against wolves better in the more
Agricultural or open prairie type areas. The heavier the bush the more the wolves take the coyotes out.

O begin to believe you are right. While I trap for fun (I take 3 weeks off in oct/Nov to trap/hunt) it would be nice to put a few more in the boards. It gives me confidence in my abilities to catch wolves, but until the feds change their stance, letting them go is a bit more fun then I need! I will research how far I have to go to find more open country. I believe if I follow old grade south i will come into more of a forest farmland area

Perhaps. Here there are a few sneaking back into the area, now we will see how long they make it. I see them, more so their tracks but never hear them. On the other hand deer opener was cold, windless, and quiet and about 15 minutes before true sunset the pack here started howling. Sounded like about 6 which would match tracks. They went quiet until about 10 after sunset and opened up again. This time others answered from the southeast a very long way out and another group out to the west again a very long way out. I have very good hearing but three packs does not leave room for coyotes.

Osky: you indicated you used to live in Longville; where are you located now?

Today I received and began to read a book written by Marc Bekoff, "Coyotes: Biology, behavior and management. In the book there is a research paper related to Northern MN and specifically an area to the NE of where I have been trapping. Aside from information related to prey preferences, dispersal habits and territorial range size; a prominent conclusion was that coyote s generally avoided or were excluded from adjacent areas occupied by wolves. There was a general southerly dispersion of young coyotes. This study was under taken over what appears to be a ten year period ending in 1977. The wolf population since then has expanded significantly. It would appears that their dominance in this part of the state may explain the apparent decline of the coyote in the area i am in.

I would agree with you on this as the numbers of coyotes have decresed while the numbers of wolf sightings have increased. I haven't caught a wolf yet but I know it's just a matter of time.
