Me and another local coyote trapper was talking yesterday. We were thinking about leaving our sets in, while tending them daily, for 2 weeks then leaving the area and setting up everything in completely new areas. He has 40 sets out since Oct 15th and has 14 coyote and two fox. He said when they come through I make catches but 80% are caught within the first 2 weeks.
I only have 15 sets in for three weeks and caught 3 coyote 2 skunks and a fox. Same thing with me when they come by I pick them up but man its forever waiting for new sign to show up. We are around these areas all throughout the year and set where we see the most sign but still it can be awhile until they make their rounds.

I run sets in a area for about 3 weeks then pull out and go to the next property for 3weks then switch back. If it wasn't for work I'd run em both the entire season but only have enough time to check and keep up with about 12 to 15 sets before work everymorning.

The last two coyote catches to ten and twelve days each. This seems typical due to the size of the home range. Fox come quicker due to smaller home ranges

Here with a lower populations of coyotes 21 days, fox 1 week is more than enough time.Varys a lot in different area's with high/low density.

I keep my set for the time I am set in the area and then pull them.I trap other animals in the same place. So I am about 3 weeks in the places that everything is slow down and then pull.the places close to home till I pull every thing up and is done for the season.

My frame of thought is we get a 75 day season if yotes make there rotation every 5-8 days I get 8-15 shots at them! If its a good dispersal route who know how many yotes will go thru in a undetermind amount of time. if I got fresh sign I stay put. Unless another reason forces me to pull

I'm a firm believer yotes fill in quicker than most give them credit for.

Is it possible to run both areas at the same time? To me, I am no coyote man, if they only come through once every 5 to 7 days that would be the equivalent of leaving coon traps out only 3 days. I'm probably not thinking like a coyote trapper but I wouldn't leave traps in only for 3 to 4 days if I have good sign there.

80% of my catches are not within the first two weeks. Ive had sets out for over a month before they ever make a coyote catch. Others i can count on a catch once a week. Ive also had a few places that i catch like crazy in the first week, then it goes dead. Where im trapping now, i will stay there until february when deer season goes out and i can move into new locations that owners wont let anyone in during deer season. I will move sets around on a property if needed during that time.

my advice is buy more traps and trap all of it at the same time if possible.

Well thats what I would like to do but I need to be working by 8am 5 days per week. But i do work alot on weekends so many times I can push that back to 9 am. At any rate I do have a few more traps maybe 10 more sets and i am getting more and more sets weatherproof with all of this rain and freezing weather. So I may be able to get another 8-10 sets in. I am making more waxed dirt of the woodstove as I type.

Alarm clocks go off at 4AM if you set them. Check them traps in the dark and make one new set every day.
How long? 3 weeks to 3 months, normal state of things a set that has to be "gone to" if something hasn't happened in three weeks it loses my interest-time is money- but, if a set has produced in past years and it is where I can check it "on my way" to some where else, it may stay in all season. (once had a trap set from Thanksgiving til the last day of January and as I was pulling traps It had a nice fox in it, one of those places that should have produced the first night)

Seems my area is travelled the same. They run circuits it seems. There will be track on a road then nothing for up to a week. If I feel a set is in a good location I will leave it as long as I am going by it to get to other sets. If it is in an area that I was looking out to I will pull after 2 weeks. I try to run as efficient as possible. I may revisit the same site again if I change my route and it is in the loop. Just how I do it.

Wish I had more time to trap....

If you can figure out the following:
What days coyotes come on a property
What days they come to a certain part of property
What interests them on days with a full moon
What interests them on days with a new moon
What interests them on all the other days
How to make coyotes back fill your area when you remove the locals
I think you see where I'm going

Plus to catch a lot of coyotes you have to have a lot of coyotes

Running coyote line is nothing like other lines in my opinion

My son caught a coyote on the second to last day of season last year on a set he hadn't freshened in over two months, we had taken 5 other coyotes on that 150 yard stretch of field edge early in the season. But it's so easy to check we leave traps set all season, some times it pays sometimes it doesn't.

If you have the time and the traps leave them as long as you can check them

Good luck and have fun

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

If I have a lot of ground I will set heavy catch the easy ones and pull out alll with in 7-8 days and move to next farm and do the same. Just keeps ur catch up. Then when I run out of land I will go back to the first one and set again and if it’s slow I will leave for at least 14 days just my way not saying it’s the rite way

Had a set connect on News Years morning that had been in the ground since Thanksgiving. Never relured or baited. Drove by it everyday, so didn't make a special trip.

We have lots of hound hunters here so areas fill and empty over nite at times! I cant say i've seen the territorial behaviors that's so highly reguarded. Back when I used to run dogs we've jumped single in heat females and have half dozen dogs running with her! Now granted they could of all been dispersing yoy yotes. But were was the king and queen of that area! Now I will say and have saw evidence of small core areas being protected. But not multiple sections.
