I just got a couple brand spanking new #9’s. I’m trying to decide if I should wax them after I boil and logwood dye them or not.
I have waxed my #5s in the past and it seemed to help keep them from freezing to the ground and keep the moss we cover them w from freezing hard. BUT the last time I waxed mb750’s, they were near impossible to set.
SO y’all wax #9s for wolf?

Also do you just logwood dye or do you have a better dye (maybe something white)?
Thank you.

I wax mine. It really helps them come up through the snow. I prefer white speed dip, but I do use logwood dye too. If you have trouble setting waxed traps just scrape the wax off where the dog sits, and you're good to go. Good luck, hope you catch a pile!

That is what I do also for the dog to pan contact.
I found that a waxed trap works far better when called upon vs. an untreated trap. Dips have given poor results, for my needs, having tried both water based and petroleum cut dips.
My gear needs to work in heavy freeze/thaw conditions. A boil in hemlock and spruce followed by a wax job seems to be the best option for my wolf gear. Mind you, given my winter temperatures here in SE dark traps aren’t a factor. They get buried and covered anyways, not usually with snow.

I don't wax my 9s or any of the big wolf size traps, just speed dip and boil. For me they are just to much to handle the way they are let-alone making them more "slippery" and vulnerable to going off while setting them. Guess I'm a wimp lol.

^^^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^ I agree!

When the trap is boiled and you use clean gloves the trap looses any odor after a few days at 20 below. If you get a refusal your trap is either dirty or your site is not prepared visually good enough.

I have bought used traps that have been waxed and they are a real pain especially in our dry cold climate. At least when it used to be cold!

If you can leave your traps after boiled hidden on your line is the best. Wolves encounter metal on their routes so its not foreign to them. IMO
