There are a couple links to help you get started making your own boards for next to nothing. Just need a few pieces of scrap wood. Most any wood will get you by until you can save up for some commercially made stretchers.

I'm in the same boat and that's exactly what I'm doing. I went to Lowe's and grabbed a few pine boards, approximately 2 of each. I lay out the measurements, draw my lines, cut it with a jig saw or circular saw, and then sand the edges with my Mouse sander. They come out good enough for this amateur. I'm not seeking a Top Lot spot just yet so as long as I can keep the measurements within a +or- 1/4" I should be fine, at least that's what I've been told.

You can't cheat the mountain pilgrim. Mountain's got its own ways.

I've got old shipping crate boards. They were free from neighbor just had to cut them down to match size. Look around you can find same thing somewhere.
