I took a young man out fox hunting Tuesday evening the first set up I no sooner hit the caller and some coyotes lit up across the road on another farm. Next thing ya know the farmer was shining a spotlight in the field looking for them. Right then and there that ruined our chance to all any in. Oh well. The next place we went we were walking through a field and we saw a set of eyes. We tried lip squeaking it in but it went out the field farther. It finally stopped and the young man took a shot at it and missed, I saw it was a grey fox. It then ran into the woods. We set up instantly and I put the caller on grey fox pup distress and it wasn’t 5 minutes a grey fox came running out of the woods and stopped long enough to let the young man shoot. He got it this time. That was his first fox shot ever hunting at night. He is definitely hooked now. Last evening I took a hand call up to his house and gave it to him and showed him how to run it. Now he can go out if I can’t. Here’s a pic if I can get it to work

That's awesome!!! Good for you for taking a youngster out. I would like to get into calling fox and coyotes. What would be a good starting call and how does a person figure out what calls to use while sitting?

Thanks
Jason

It depends on what you want to spend on calls. I use a FoxPro e caller with about every sound on it imaginable lol
You can always you hand calls, I use rabbit distress with those and a mouse squeaker. I’ve called fox in before with just a mouse squeaker alone. If you get an ecaller I would recommend a foxpro but there’s others out there that are less expensive. The two ecallers I have are both refurbished and work just as good as a new one. As far as lights I use night eyes lights, a scanner head lamp and a red light for my 17 hornet.
