My son wants to trap. We picked up a couple Duke #3 in town tonight. I'd like to get some used traps from the guys over in the shed. Is there somewhere I can go that will compare the different traps brands/sizes to each other, other than researching each trap? I am trying to find out what other traps are the same as a Duke #3 and so forth.

check state laws first since most have limits on jaw spread allowed, on land, and in water.
this link will get you to pages to look at most available https://www.minntrapprod.com/Traps/departments/416/

to my knowledge there is no "chart" with them all lines up to compare, BUT there could be one somewhere!

Generally traps of a given size will be of similar strength and dimensions across manufacturers, though exact jaw spread and other features will vary slightly. For example a Duke 1.5 will be pretty much the same as a Bridger 1.5. Some brands are built beefier then others, but physical dimensions will be pretty close. If you are interested in exact dimensions (for example in PA we are limited to a maximum jaw spread of 6.5”) then I would suggest checking out the website of one of the trapping suppliers for that information. Both F&T Post and Minisota Trapline Products should have more details on their websites. Hopefully that provides the information that you’re looking for.

What are you targeting? That will determine what size trap you should be going with.

Thanks guys. He wants to start on Coyote. I am thinking what he traps will depend on what is in the area he is trapping, which at this point will be gov land.

Any brand of number three will do good on coyotes if that is what he targets. There is a lot of good info on here to help lead you guys in a good direction. Just keep in mind to each there on get him out get a few sets out find what works best for him and master them steps first before mudding the water with a thousand things that work for others.

MTP has the jaw spread listed for most of the traps they sell, some they list both inside and outside, the ones with a single size I think are outside measure. https://www.minntrapprod.com/Traps/departments/416/

I look for traps #1.75-#3 or jaw spread of ~5 " - 6" inside spread for coyotes and cats.

Found a couple "best trap" threads; https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6288355/1

I absolutely love mb550s for coyote, but I understand they can be a bit spendy for a kid starting out. I trapped some coyotes in duke #2 , and #4 but I never tried #3s. These days it’s either a Bridger #3 or an mb 550 for me. In reality if he does his part and pays attention any trap #2 or greater will do the trick. The main thing is not to get discouraged by no catches or misses. We all have those, and I’ve found that if you want to learn, the ones you don’t catch will teach you so much more than the ones you do catch.

I have been using the Bridger #3 four coil with outside laminations. Very good trap.

#3 Duke will do the job on coyotes, used them and after a couple of years I baseplated them and added a 4 coil setup. Over time I also went to Pit pans and SS rod dogs.
However they will handle needs for coyote right out of the box. Check your pan tension tho.

The #3 is the right size trap for coyotes. Most of the #3s are decent. Nothing wrong with the Duke #3s to start....or even finish.

But nothing like comparing a little. That said, you don't really save much money buying used. And if Duke is your style, they offer free shipping on anything over $100. Duke is great to deal with.
