A couple of years ago White was picking on me about our babby moose here in Maine. Here are a couple pictures of one we killed and one not in a zone we could hunt but a good moose for Maine

Nice moose for sure,, after all the moose we've packed and sledded for miles the pick-up truck boogles my mind? I read and watch shows about the efforts some/most of you go through moose hunting and i relize just how lucky we are to have vast wilderness that has been managed for timber. Every now and then some guys will make a bad shot and work for a day and a half to get them out but we are getting pretty good at recovery. I have a length of 5/8th pollysteel rope thats 600' so far we have only came short twice. The Ranger will get in a hard spot too. I have a 3" Outcast lift kit and 31" tires. My sons called in a medium sized bull last fall about 1.25 miles back. They used my Ranger and a chainsaw to get it to the truck. They only broke two exiles. I own a seafood shop so many times when we get back my Dad comes up with his boom truck and we skinn and quarter the moose and hang it in the cooler. We hung the biggest bull I have seen that my wife killed for 19 days and it was elegant. Dressed 1023 lbs.

How'd you get it in the truck? We normally use one truck as a deadman and tie a block on the ball then pull the moose to the high side of a ditch. Then back the truck in the ditch so the tail gate is ground level or close then run a rope over the cab of the truck and tie it to the moose and pull it on the back of the truck in the ditch. Quite slick really.

Some guys have pulled them with rope from upto 1 mile back. You walk the rope through the woods and have several snatch blocks and a aluminum ladder and some walkie talkies.Tie on to the moose horns then (very important) tie at least 2-3 hitches around the nose. That keeps his head up. then tie the other end to the ball of the truck. Use the walkie talkies to tell the driver when to pull and when to stop. Also what works well is two wheelers tied together with a tire in between. You would not belive how far two 4 wheelers will go pulling and pushing like that.

The guy in the red shirt, Chris, is one of my sons. The three of them hunted hard all week for a big bull and passed on two that were larger then the one they shot but by the last day or so it was time to be less selective. My son Tom was in the US Army and he built the AR that was used, a 450 Bush Master. Basically a semi auto 45/70.

Carried out a lot of moose quarters back in the day, thru some rough country, then on the river. The easiest ones were the salvage from train hits.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Nice moose. Only had the opportunity to pack one moose out. That is a lot of work. Glad it was back in my younger years.

How'd you get it in the truck? It's a calf. Look. The hide hasn't even finished growing on it's butt. Any moose you can get in the truck is a calf.......it's in the regulations.
