I met 3 boys several months back on a Author's Visit who want to learn to trap. I've been sending them letters and now a 4th boy wants to learn too! They are really serious about it and are wanting to get supplies. Anyone know of a place were they could get some cheap (maybe used) traps, and other supplies? They are only about 9 - 10 so they don't have much money.
Thanks,
AuthorTrapper.

The Trap Shed on this forum. State conventions are another good place to shop for traps and other supplies.

Wissmiss sells used traps. You might want to see what she has.

The state trapping convention is the best way imo for them to get the best bang for their buck. Lots of guys are very excited to see kids getting into the sport. When I went to the Vt trapping convention for the first time 20years ago I didn't have much $ at all and on top of it I had 4 #3 stolen out the back of my mentors truck. Word got around and multiple guys who were selling stuff found me and gave me around a dozen traps to make u for the bad experience. It meant a lot to me and still does. But even before that people were offering me very cheap prices on their used traps after talking with them and explaining I was just getting into it and was very limited on $. Also helped steer me in the right direction on what to get to be able to target the largest variety of species with the fewest different kinds of traps

Anthony, when I was 10, I was raking leaves and shoveling snow for neighbors and helping Dad around the yard, etc, to earn a lil spending money.

Might should suggest this to the boys to help them afford getting started.

Hey, that is what I'm doing right now! Not the snow part, but leaves, yes!

Like was said before, the kids need to look into their State Trapping Association, go to a few Trapping meets and find a local or close by experienced trapper to guide them in the right direction for trapping. That’s the thing with new trappers, they will pretty much believe whatever someone tells them to do when it comes to Trapping, because they won’t know any better and then become frustrated with the lack of results.

Yes, sir. I had that problem when we first started. I've been trying to find videos on YouTube for them that have some good information. If anyone on here has any tips for fox, bobcat, possum, or coon trapping let me know!

You'd be wise to speak with the parents AFTER finding a mentor in their area. Then you have a name and number to give the parents to call, the mentor, to schedule ride alongs or even a quick class in the yard or both.

I too mowed lawns and raked leaves to buy traps. We had no money while growing up, so this was the only way. I remember taking several days worth of earnings to the hardware store and buying a couple of 110's. Walked outside of town to trap rats. Then took earnings and bought more. Got up to a dozen traps and if I remember correctly, I caught nearly 30 rats. Had the time of my life and is something I'll never forget.
