I thought I posted this earlier today. Must be getting forgetful in my old age. Anyway, several years ago a Tman member wrote to tell me he used chunks of burnt orange peel in his bait. He said the coon would chew on it but wasn’t sure they ate it. I don’t recall his name but I’ve always wondered if orange concentrate, or orange liqueur, or even burnt chunks of orange peel had been used by anyone to consistently catch coon?

Coon are like all animals. They are curious and will investigate most anything if even just briefly. But sometimes briefly is all you need. Fall and winter months animals cant afford to be too picky so they will be attracted to familiar and unfamiliar odors. Add in some edible material to the odor push and you will have generated interest in that material.

if they chewed on the burnt peels was most likely the brunt smell and taste.

Has anyone tried orange marmalade or an orange liqueur, or a combination, to see if it’s as good (or not) compared to everything else out there? Our coon are holed up now. It’s probably going to get tested by me next summer. I was hoping someone on Tman had done this already.

JMO, you'd be better off using a burnt Oil of citrus or an orange oil in a sweet base with a decent carrier.

Orange Jell-O powder in strawberry OR grape jelly is great for coon

They might work great in more southerly states but in MN it’s below freezing generally when coon are prime. Using an orange liqueur mixed with orange marmalade should keep working or at least be pliable to the mid-20s or colder due to the alcohol content. I was hoping someone had tried it and could let us know how it a) held up in the cooler weather and b) did coon like it better than say a shellfish smelling bait?
