I am sure someone here has done it or has ideas how to do it. So my situation is a friend's boss has a fisher in his neighborhood has killed a few cats all the local squirrels and is suspected of disemboweling a 3 month old lab. So they want it gone. I have my fisher tag and I'm near by so since this is my first time targeting them. I am thinking cages are the best bet near other houses but I not against conibear up high. How tough are fisher on cages. Is muskrat a good choice for bait and any other ideas how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

Beaver is better if you can get it. Think dog avoidance in a residential area. Be careful where you set cage to avoid children getting bit. A wooden box with a conibear recessed 7"inches would be better choice. Use 160 or 220 conibear. Loud skunk lure like gusto to attract it.

Good call on the children any body grip will be above 5' off the ground. I may try to gain permission on a pine plantation on the next road it's 80 acres and has a ridgeline leading to their house so It looks like a good pinch point. How hard are they on cages I have a couple older coon cages not the cheep ones but not the ones you can stand on either.

Elevated wooden box with a conibear recessed 7"inches or more. Raccoon size cage trap is also a possibility but should be enclosed on sides and top. Beaver is a very good bait but most meat will work along with a sweet beaver castor/anise lure.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I have caught many fisher in cages and they do no damage to a decent cage. Very easy to get into a cage. A quarter of beaver wired up in a back corner is excellent bait. They can become hyper and die from exhaustion while caged. Just be sure to wire to a post or put a stake through the cage so they do not roll it.

Yes. you can cage trap them. cover floor so they do not feel the wire. Cover cage and use any bait you want for fisher. use lure inside cage and up in tree close to cage to keep them looking in area of cage. You need to stop that fisher from hunting and keep around your cage. The bait will do the rest. Raccoon size trap. They act like a raccoon in the cage. you need to keep them from rolling the trap so use a stake.

They are individuals...some meaner than others, I've caged a few and never had cage damage. I caged them trapping for coon...before and after season along a grassy creek surrounded by pines. When trapping them in season like now I use a 160 or 220 Belisle in a set back box 7" or more back under the top. Loud Gusto and rat or beaver meat in the back by the hardware cloth back. I prefer them on the ground. [Linked Image]

I'm confused. Why trap them at all if they're ridding the neighbourhood of cats? highly unlikely a fisher is responsible for the injury to the dog, maybe if it was a pup.

Thanks guys I appreciate the information I will update when I set up next week. Yeah he has seen the fisher many times once eating one of the cats. It is not my neighborhood but apparently they want cats around outside. I don't know why but I do know I have a fisher tag and he has a fisher so I am gonna try to trap it for him. Lol

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. Two sets-one in a saddle between two ridges and one by a small spring. The one in the saddle connected on day 9. It really means a lot to me but seems like more to the family who was tormented by this critter. Thanks for making me look like I've caught fisher all my life. Lol Sure feels good to get the target animal and no non targets. Man these things stink. This one is much bigger than the one I found last spring but that was a female and this is a male.
