If I was to employ a sliding weight to a water logged leg hold for say racoon or mink. How much weight do you think would be enough to keep them in the depths? Might be over thinking it.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Set for the largest thing you could catch.
If that is a beaver or otter better use 30 lbs min
10 lbs-ish has been enough for me for coon and mink.
Rocky bottoms require somewhat less since its harder to drag a weight over rocks IME.

I like to keep my coons dry so I attach enough chain so they can get out of the water on pocket sets. When you need to use a slide, trapjohn is spot on with lbs. - I use 10 lb window weights for coon and that's plenty for mink as they can expire with the weight of the trap. I prefer to use 6' rebar to stake the deep water ends of my drowning slides, I put another stick or beaver chew and create a "V" on the deep water end next to the rebar, they typical wrap the chain.

I tried the 35lb cinderblocks this year, set a couple Bridger #3 four coil for beaver on Monday. I've caught 2, a front foot on 1, back foot on the other. Both were the biggest I've caught and they didn't budge the block. 15' cable in about chest deep water.. Anyway, that's what I'd use if I was going for coon.

The weight you use will depend on the bottom structure. You have a hard gravel or sandy bottom and a beaver can easily move 30 LBS.

I have used rocks, cinder blocks and stakes prefer stakes as long as I can drive them in. I'm starting to switch to sandbags. I like running out of my canoe, when river and ma nature cooperates. Lugging around a lot of weight when I'm running by myself isn't fun.
