Hey everybody, hope everyone is doing well. I have been getting pretty good success on my K-9 line but have been facing one consistent issue. Although I am still making catches (especially good success with remake sets) With a consistent layer of snow on the ground now it has brought to my attention that I have been getting some coyote and fox avoiding many of my sets. The reoccurring theme seems to be that they will come to my sets but stay about 4-8 feet away from the front of the set but many times will work the set from behind the backing, almost as if they know that the trap is in front and not behind. I know one solution to this is to put a second trap blind on the opposite side of the backing and I have done this and been successful but I prefer to only use one trap per set and want to figure out the real issue of why they aren’t working my sets in the intended way. One theory I have is that they may be able to smell where I was when making the set? Although I am generally very carefully about leaving human scent. Or maybe they won’t finish into the set from the front simply because they are skiddish? I use mostly flat sets and some dirt holes but they seems to work them all the same way. My most commonly used set is hollow bone with lure inside and a squirt of fox urine. (I have had more success using fox urine as opposed to coyote urine since it seems coyote urine may be intimidating to a fox) My other most successful set has been a cow pie or rock with bait underneath. I blend all my sets to look very natural and for the most part they get snowed on anyways so making them look natural couldn’t be the issue. Like I said I have made quite a few catches with these sets so they are working much of the time, just not as much as I would like seeing as if every coyote that works my sets got caught, I would potentially make twice as many catches. Would greatly appreciate any insight as to why this may be happening and wondering if anyone has seen this before. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
