Looking to snare some coyotes on the ice in the cattails. Lets talk anchors vs drags and support ideas? Also bait station ideas

Wire your snare and support to the middle of a good stick, poke a hole in the ice then put the stick under the ice.

I drill a hole in the Ice with my cordless drill then pound a metal concrete stake in until I get through the ice. In the cattails it doesn't take much. I make anchors from metal conduit just like earth anchors. I pound them in with the same stake. You can feel when it gets past the ice.

We can't use drags on snares in ND.

We discussed this In another thread. Take your cordless drill and screw In some 1/ 2" x 6" lag bolts. And If It were me I'd place the carcass dump out In the open. Then track the coyotes back into cover and then once you have tracks hang your snares.

If you can set snares where the dog will likely die on some cover{cattails} go ahead and set . In my experience a coyote that dies on open slick ice quite often freezes down and you lose considerable fur getting him out ...I dont set ice anymore .

That's why you Use CRs In the cattails so you don't kill them.

CRs only here in NJ With no entanglement most are alive and well

I use a fence post with rams. Works good.

OK , Got a question ..I know they are required by law in some places ,but how do you guys with CRs keep em from chewing out ? Dont they get a bunch of fur damage ?

Once I went to 1X19 and a barrel swivel just below the fully opened loop (max12") I didn't have any more chew outs.

The smallest we can use Is 3/32.

Ok , that explains it .. I use the 1/16 and 5/64 for snares and 3/32 for extensions . You guys with the heavy cable are talented to catch em with that heavy stuff , the light cable is much easier to hide , however you'd best be killing em with it .
