Here it would be beaver hands down.
I don't find the need for lure I always have tons of bait, although some love it.

Beaver would be my choice as well. Elevate it if targeting cats. Lures I've had great luck with would be Milligan's cat-man-do,Carmen's bobcat gland lure.

Beaver would be my choice also but, bait is not necessary if you have good cat gland lure.

I agree about beaver but all those will make good cat bait especially the feral cat.Skunk essence is attractive to cats.If skunks and possums are still active,I'd put it a few yards from the set,3-4' high.I also like beaver castor with some skunk, also gland lure.Red fox gland and urine will work well,if you have it.Some use coyote gland.I like to use house cat droppings at the set, whenever they are available.

I used to use beaver a lot for lynx but I have a lure now that makes it unnecessary to bother, just a bait stick and a snare I usually catch 50 plus a year

Hard to beat beaver, fowl works well to where legal feathers and feline go hand in hand.As for lure there are many Andy's Supercat,Waterline Call lure,James MT Lynx,Derrick's Pecos,Cavens V 7,Fox Hollows Voo Doo and GH 2 are just some of the good cat lures I've had good luck with.

Yesterdays check. Had beaver meat wired in this cubby and if you look close at the crappy pics my cheap digital camera takes, you can see the cat walked right up to my cubby and then wandered off without touching it. Three times in the past ten days or so cats have worked this beaver flowage. They definitely show an interest in beaver.

I've got skunk, Caven's Violator 7, beaver castor, Sierra Mist and others on sets in this area. The cat has to be in just the right frame of mind. Frustrating.

I know not everyone has acess to lots of quality bait, but In my experience,no lure will have the calling power of a large bait. Not only do you get the scent attraction, but also the very important sight and sound attractant from the large amount of bird and mammal activity which is the prime attraction of a large bait for the target animal.
An animal has more than one sense, and a large bait will play to 4 of the 5-sight sound, smell and taste.

Posco, you need to remember, cats don't have the jaws like a canine to gnaw on a large chunk of frozen bait.At a jackpot we like to give them a chance to feed so we feather the bait with an axe. This allows a cat to feed on it when its frozen. We do catch some approaching the bait but the way its set up most are snared leaving.

I've got entire beaver carcasses wired in cubbies. I have a road killed deer wired to a tree waiting for something to come across it so I can decide what sets to make. A month into the season and I have little to show for it except for some close calls.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate that and I'll keep that in mind as I make new sets. I always enjoy reading your stuff.

Everything really does like beaver. I found this last spring. A bear was hungry enough to try and tear apart a beaver lodge. [Linked Image]

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

Once the snow gets deeper, bigger baits really have the calling power.

Something I'm noticing this year that is distinct from last season is the way the cats are working their territories. They were walking this and other logging roads in the area for considerable distances last year, this year they cross here and there randomly. Snow depths are similar but the cat behavior isn't.

I'm curious how much different lynx behave compared to bobcat. I've had all of my bobcat sets lured with cat lure from just about every maker you can name but the cats don't seem to care.

I don't have bobcat in the area I trap so do not have a clue. I've had lynx walk relatively close past bait but never a good lure, If they don't go directly to the set they circle it looking for the scent and get caught in snares set around it tight spaces.
