Do many of you trap coyotes for ADC work?

If so, I suppose your work will be ramping up once deer season is over.

I don't really have an adc business, but I work on a ranch where I take care of about 400 cows and 300 sheep so I always have some gear out for coyotes somewhere. Don't really worry about the deer much, just try not to use much urine in an area where the deer traffic is high. I learned that one the hard way.

I work from Feb 12 th to about Oct 25 th in Alabama trapping coyotes. Then I guide deer hunts and thermal hog hunts. All my ADC work IS coyote work. Caught over 300 last year. My clients are LARGE land owners that are QDMA minded

Yes and yes. That is part of how I organize my annual work schedule. I begin when each landowner is finished hunting or season ends and it does not interfere with my hunting.

I ADC for suburban coyotes from time to time and I have to get a special permit to use foothold traps. Right now I've got a permit for a job on a very small housing area plot but I've caught three fat raccoons instead of the mangey coyote Im after. The homeowner still pays a smaller fee for the raccoons but I feel bad about charging it. I put a cam on a urine/gland lured post over Thanksgiving (to make sure the yote was still around). I STILL got 4 x as many pictures of coons (and several of a pet cat) but the yote did show up after five days. I did a urine post set with ONLY coyote urine but it's been five days and nothing. What kind of set/techniques would you use if you wanted to ONLY catch coyotes?

"Set/techniques to only catch coyotes" IMO there is no such thing. Coons and skunks are attracted to any coyote sets. Any bait/lure or urine that will attract coyotes, will attract coons and skunks. A well know coyote trapper I know says he makes coyotes sets with bait/lure, but does not place any traps. That draws the coons. Then he makes a set with only dirt, but no bait/lure. That is where he places his trap. That does not seem to draw the coons as much, but will attract the coyotes.

When we run into situations like that where we know there is a heavy coon population we end up catch the coons out first then going after the coyotes.

RobW, I was wondering about that, I have an active bait pile that is being visited by raccoons and now finally coyotes as well. I was a little surprised to see raccoons around still, since we've had temps well below 30 degrees. Anyhow, I was thinking about setting some dp's to get the raccoons out of the way, so they don't mess up my coyote sets, but I wasn't sure if and how it would affect the coyotes. Does it?
Or did I just answer my own question, if the raccoons get into my blind sets and cable restraints around the bait pile, I guess that will affect catching coyotes. So I have to get them either way. smile

Hi Bob,

Whenever the raccoons are moving I set dog proof traps to intercept them before they get to the traps set for coyotes. January and February are usually exempt. It usually works, but some raccoons don’t follow instructions. In my opinion, it is certainly worth the effort which makes the job easier overall. Usually the landowner wants the raccoons to go away as well.

Best wishes, Willy
