Hello,
I bought some new traps from Southern Snares & Supply. Should I boil them before I put them on my trapline?

Water or land? If land, boil or power wash them.

Land for Coyotes.

I boil, hang up to get a rust sheen then dye. No wax.

Some people boil then put them in a bucket of water mixed with vinegar to get them rusting faster.

Forget the boiling, use your dishwasher. Ideally, it would be nice to let them rust, then dip in your favorite dye

If you just get oil off and wax you should be fine this year.

Just curious, why do you say no wax ?

Don't trust them. You wouldn't rust a new wrench or hammer, why rust a brand new trap?
Clean off the grease, wax them, and get many, many years of dun service from the new toys!
They work fine for coyotes new this way.

X2. I never rust new traps. Clean, wax use. Treat traps as needed to prevent rust. I will dye traps the second year just because I do. Don't have to but like I said, I do....

The tannin treatment (dye) is to remove/convert/prevent rust. Wax is to keep oxygen away from the steel and thus prevent rust. I have caught fox and coyote in unwashed new traps. But a wash to remove the machine oil won't hurt them, car wash and wax should be fine. I may try the car wash wax one day.

My dishwasher always has some kind of detergent in it. Will that influence the smell of the traps?

Run it through once with detergent, and a second time with none if you have smelly detergent. Make sure to skip the dry cycle. Do it at night, then open it after it runs and pull the rack out they are on to let them rust a little more will they air dry overnight.

Thats what I have done anyway, and its worked perfect for me. I have yet to have a trap dug up.

After too many years of dyeing and waxing I tried cleaning off factory oil and waxing. It worked. Then I tried cleaning off factory oil, spray painting (drying a couple days before next step) and dipping in Full Metal Jacket. This worked too.

“Tradition” is great but I don’t have the time for tradition anymore. Got better things to do with my time than watching a pot boil, cuz it never does!
