I boil, hang up to get a rust sheen then dye. No wax.
Some people boil then put them in a bucket of water mixed with vinegar to get them rusting faster.

Don't trust them. You wouldn't rust a new wrench or hammer, why rust a brand new trap? Clean off the grease, wax them, and get many, many years of dun service from the new toys! They work fine for coyotes new this way. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Don't have to but like I said, I do....

Wish I had more time to trap....

They work fine for coyotes new this way. Jim X3 The tannin treatment (dye) is to remove/convert/prevent rust. Wax is to keep oxygen away from the steel and thus prevent rust. I have caught fox and coyote in unwashed new traps. But a wash to remove the machine oil won't hurt them, car wash and wax should be fine. I may try the car wash wax one day.

Forget the boiling, use your dishwasher. Ideally, it would be nice to let them rust, then dip in your favorite dye My dishwasher always has some kind of detergent in it. Will that influence the smell of the traps?

After too many years of dyeing and waxing I tried cleaning off factory oil and waxing. It worked. Then I tried cleaning off factory oil, spray painting (drying a couple days before next step) and dipping in Full Metal Jacket. This worked too.
“Tradition” is great but I don’t have the time for tradition anymore. Got better things to do with my time than watching a pot boil, cuz it never does!
