What are you guys using to anchor traps on frozen water ways? The ice is 4-6" thick right now and I would like to set some cables on the frozen swamp.

I have used a good chunk of number 9 wire shaped in a W. Squish it down and drill a half inch hole in the ice. Stuff it down the hole the day before, and quick link to the loop sticking up after it freezes in. The beauty of it is that you just cut the wire off just at the ice and leave the anchor in.

If it isn't going to freeze, wire to the center of a solid 12" hardwood stick. Wire halfway down the stick. Chop a hole in the ice and shove the whole works down the hole so I pulls tight against the bottom of the ice. You do need to chop this one out though to get your trap back.
