Going to experiment with fastening hardware cloth to the side of my 110 and 160 stands to try and cover the beaver bank den runs without catching beaver. Colony traps are not legal in NY, otherwise, I would just use a wide one to cover the beaver runs for rats.
I hope what I think will happen doesn’t happen. Let us know how it turns out for ya.
I’m thinking the 110s will be flat bulldozed and the 160s will either catch a couple more beaver with perfect strikes on smaller ones or give them an aching face after they are briefly caught then make a mess. I’ve been wrong many times though
Well Aix you were mostly right. I made 5 sets this way. 3 were definitely yanked by beaver. Two caught rats. One caught a rat and yanked. Beaver are very strong and determined. All the 110s were at the end of their cable. I'm curious if the beaver just try to barrel through, or if they grab it and yank. Based On how far the cable was pulled it appears they yanked them.
Anyway, this is a tricky set because the runs/dens have to be shallow, which a lot of beaver runs aren't. Its a race to see who finds the trap first. It would be real good in a pond after beavers are gone (NY has a no beaver traps within 15 ft of den or house rule, so you could set fenced down 110s and not have a problem with beaver bulldozers).
