Just wondering if anyone here has experience with using green longs (3-4 in diameter by 4 ft long) of all the looking I've done all I have found is one article and I'd like to uses them for coyote but I'm a little sceptical. Also if I used these, because of the weight could I use 1/8 cable instead of chain?

I've see coyotes eat cable but not chain. Same with the logs, like my wife said, bigger is all way better.

don't use cable

use more of a clog/drag than 4' long, like another 2', or an entire sapling that might only be 2-3" dia but be 10' long.

8-10' chain on 8-10' x 3" solid clog works for me, tie in at the 1/3 point so it doesn't drag straight- the idea is to tangle quickly yet have some give/bounce

Are you finding these logs at your locations or are you dragging them In?

In my case I use what's there, not logs- logs would be 12" DBH- but various fallen limbs or saplings that are appropriate size and very solid. I my woods there is almost always something, I'll also sometimes long chain to a live sapling of the right size.
Using a 3-5" pole as clog means you can also use it as backing and/or guiding as well. Using what you find in place means less change to the target and less time spent making the set.
If it were a carry in thing I'd use a steel fence post or a grapple; a lot of my ground is too gravelly for good staking, or has ledge rock at the surface; but brushy enough to make good use of clogs.
It is about adapting to the environment and using what is available. I probably wouldn't use pole clogs in open prairie grasslands or bald tops.. Where staking is suitable, double staking is the best anchor system, imo, but where stakes don't work something else will.

Use chain
I have used seasoned hedge scraps from posts I cut. I use ones too short for posts and lay them with one end toward the trail and put scent on it. They can lay there for several years without going bad.

Just passin through

I use about a 5 ft green tree > 5" in dia. 10ft chain and 1/8 cable on end with double ferrule slip loop for most of my toggles.

A 5 foot 3 inch GREEN log is all I use for my legholding up here in frozen snow country. Often it freezes down where you put it, and the yote doesn't even budge it anyway, but when they do loosen it up, they don't go far at all. And yes, use chain, imo. I use an 8 or so foot chain, and it is easy then to hide or use the log in the set.
