Looking at buying a drill press. Trouble is that it's 220 3 phase. I don't have and don't want to play around with converter and I can't easily get 220 two phase to it I won't ever need the power that the motor would put out in 3 phase. So the question is, can a motor shop make the motor run on 110? Or would this be more expensive than just buying a 110 motor and replacing it?

If I recall from my electric days there is no such thing as 220 3 phase..... I believe the only way to remedy the problem is to replace motor or just find a different drill press.
Wish I had more time to trap....

I'm the furthest thing from knowledgeable about this stuff..but on my table saw...the motor can be connected to run on either 110 or 220 depending on how you connect the power cord.
Maybe look at the motor. Mine has a data plate that shows both configurations Nope, this is a big'un. It's industrial so 220 or 480 (or whatever) I believe. I assume I will need to get a different motor but figured I would toss the question out there. This is a nice, very ridged, PowerMatic drill press and variable speed which is a feature I'm looking for.

Might be cheaper/better to run 240 to it. Unless a long ways away from panel.
There are guys on here with the knowledge you seek. I aint one of em.

Sounds great ! I know I used a BIG Powermatic planer some years ago that was also 3 phase 220. What the heck are you drilling that takes that much hp ?? Nothing that takes that much. I just want the rigidity, preciseness and adjustability.

Get you a variably frequency drive to run the motor of of straight 220 ,than you can control the speeds , very nice set up this way. or just get a smaller motor . but i would prefer a vfd myself. what he said not that hard to do

Check the name plate on the motor, it should say what voltages it can be run on/at.

Usually a motor is either 3 phase or single phase... But as others have stated, the nameplate on the motor will list the voltages it can run on if it is indeed a multivoltage motor.
If it is indeed a multivoltage motor there is usually a wiring diagram inside the junction box (or "peckerhead") where the line power is connected to the motor leads. The voltage level of the incoming line power will determine which sequence the motor leads are wired in.
A few photos of the nameplate and inside the peckerhead might help.

Mike I can be wired 220 or 480 3 phase. My question was can a motor shop change that inexpensively and make it run on 110 volts.

A quick phone call to Musgraves will answer your questions. You been there before.

Mike I can be wired 220 or 480 3 phase. My question was can a motor shop change that inexpensively and make it run on 110 volts. Pretty sure your least expensive option is going to be to pony up and buy a single phase motor off the shelf or get a drive to run the one you have. And depending on the amperage drawn by the 3 phase motor you might end up having to install a higher amperage 120 volt circuit to make it work. You would have to break it all down to watts and calculate it out. Mike
