Caught my first critter on a blind set today!! I normally trap a plantation which is tough for me due to no actual trails or being able to find tracks in the pines. Even our roads there’s very little dirt except in a few places.
Well I have a small piece of property I turkey hunt on about 15 miles away and the guy asked me if I’d start trapping a little out there since he lets me hunt for free. Of course I said YES!!
I’m always reading about y’all talking about finding trails and sign, well on this property I did!! I mean a sho’nuff trail coming out of some thick stuff leading to an used firebreak due to trees down. Well dog tracks and a few coon tracks were coming and going so I decided this is EXACTLY what I’ve been reading about! I decided to set two blind sets, one at the entrance and one where it hits the thick stuff, only about 20 feet apart.
Yesterday was the first check and the farthest trap had a small catch circle and a pull out. Bummed but happy that would have been a first night catch. I remade the set and got out. Went back this morning and this young girl was in the first set!! I am pumped to say the least!! I used Zaggers way of bedding the trap with just the grass and leaves that were already there. It works!!

Check #4 and a bobkitty on a compass set. May have put the holes a little too far from trap, went about 12” each direction. Regardless whether a front foot or rear foot catch, I’ll take it!

Personally I like the smells a ways apart so that they have to move there feet to get there nose close to the lure. If they can get there nose within an inch of all lure without moving the feet get gets harder to catch them.

That was my thinking. Guess it doesn’t matter whether it’s a front foot or rear foot catch, it’s caught.

A cat on a flat set without a ton of guiding, you should be happy with any foot.
