I was turning a red fox pelt the other day after drying overnight (obviously too dry). Got halfway turned and tore about 8" of belly and side. Once it started it went like a cracked windshield! I pushed it back flesh side out and sewed LOOSELY, so as not to tear the thread through the needle holes in the skin, with normal sewing thread to keep it from tearing anymore then went ahead and turned and boarded like normal. Question is: I'm planning on having it tanned at Moyle's but am wondering if the sewing job will hold up through the tanning process or is there a chance it'll rip in half? I was thinking of rehydrating with a cold, wet (damp) towel stuck inside, turn back flesh side out, rehydrate in refrigerator with damp towel until skin is soft enough to sew tightly with dental floss and then start the drying, turning over again. Anyone do this before, am I out of luck, or is there another way? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Todd

That sucks when they tear like that, I'd suggest the damp towel trick I'm spoiled I've got a spool of heavy nylon thread that I sew all my fur up with I'm sure there's nothing wrong with dental floss but use what you have.
You shouldn't have to put it in the refrigerator either but a cool dark place should work like a basement or away from a heat source, fox pelts are a challenge to turn it's almost better to turn them to early than not if that makes sense.
Merry Christmas !
Allan

Sorry I can't answer your question but in the future if your pelt gets quite dry before turning rehydrate it like "Allan Minear stated. Don't worry about putting the damp and flexible re-hydrated pelt back on the board fur out. The re-hydrated skin dries very well and quickly, unlike a green skin against wood.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I do not turn the furs that I send to get tanned. I believe if you do, they have to turn them back to skin out / fur in for tanning anyway.

BigSky thanks for that. First I’ve heard of that but if true it’d save a lot of headaches for sure! I’ll have to ask the tannery to be sure as I get most furs tanned that I take. Even though that’s a pretty small number anyway. Again thanks for the reply.

Moyles has no problem accepting pelts fur in. In fact, I think they prefer it. Saves the hassle of you turning the pelt and running the risk of damaging it.

I assume most tanneries are the same. If you think about it, you don't turn muskrats, mink, and otter when you send them to a tannery. So why should you turn coyotes, fox, fisher and other species that are normally stretched fur out. Right??

Yep makes perfect sense to me (not that that means a whole lot wink ). I'll definitely be looking at things differently from this point forward! Such little things make me happy! LOL! Thanks again everyone!

I don't know why people have a hard time turning pelts.
Even pelts that have been dried for several days fur in can be easily turned by spraying the leather with water, letting it set for a couple minutes then drying it off with a paper towel.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Boco,
Yep normally don't have much of a problem but I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to both the fur and what I was doing from being in a hurry or whatever. 100% my fault no doubt about it. No excuses, just looking to try and minimize damage after a stupid mistake that I knew better of making in the first place. smile

During the off season I like to sand down any rough spots on my stretchers then get some old school turtle wax paste and treat those stretchers with it it helps when pulling fur on or off , some of my stretchers also have a blade width slice cut down the outside edge to help allow more air flow and the flat part routered out as well .
Merry Christmas !
Allan
