I never lure my canine sets again unless it has been raining a lot and it’s a set that stays in the whole season. Maybe after several rains over a month’s time, it might get re-lured, but most of the time, just a shot of urine. Canine sets should be on location anyhow so they should be able to find them pretty easily. If you are only leaving sets in for 2-3 weeks at a time, I don’t see any reason to ever re-lure.

I've always wondered what others do when it comes to using lure, bait, urine at coyote sets. I've seen some dip a q-tip in the lure jar, others use a pea sized drop of call lure, etc. I realize to do what works for me but I wonder if I use a really skunky long distance call lure if I can overdo it?
Same with bait, use a 2 inch glob of it down the hole, just a little dime sized chunk if it burns my nose hairs when I open the lid?
What do others do?

Make some mock sets in the off season, right before season or right after season. I made over a hundred testing lures this year. I promise you will learn more than asking questions on the internet . For me I learned more than I would if I had a hundred traps set.

I'm no expert but all I do is dip the end of a small stick in the lure bottle and put that at the set. For bait, a glob about the size of a dime is all you need. Canines have amazing noses. I usually re-lure my sets every 10-14 days or so but I don't think that's really necessary. The lure makers have their craft figured out pretty good and even after heavy rains the lure doesn't wash away. We had two plus inches of rain last week and I was still catching critters with dirt holes full with water.

I'll share a few thoughts. If you're on location and know coyotes are there and not working sets, then freshen them up with something. You can wait them out for the long haul if you have the time but during fur season you want the critter before someone else. I have caught several coyotes in an area I had sets for a week and coyotes weren't committing. I then freshen it up and have a catch the next day. They knew the sets were there and just weren't interested at the time and lost interest but give them a fresh smell and they are intrigued or curious as to the new aroma added.

I learned some coyote are very cautious and some are very bold. I found the kind of set you make can affect the intensity that they work the set. I learned how coyotes prefer to work the different sets. Not all coyotes will work the set the first time they find it. I found some lures will continue to get worked over and over again. I also learned how much presence you can have in an area before it starts affecting the coyotes. I figured out some people's theories on coyotes dont seem to hold water. And some other useful things. One other thing I learned is coyotes will give better answers to your questions.

Yes sir,

Good observations. Thanks for sharing.

I've found in my area the more subtle the set the more it is worked with intensity than the flashy eye appeal sets. I know everyone has an opinion and what they do works for them but these are my observations based on my line. Some people will pound in a T-bone and leave it exposed and think that is great eye appeal and really works because they catch coyotes doing it. If I do that I can catch coyotes but it sits for a while before they commit. But if I cover the bone and just leave the face showing(kind of like another animal is trying to hide it) it creates a curiosity factor and coyotes seem to work it more readily and quicker than the other way.

I'm curious what your results are for coyotes with subtle sets. Are they worked with more intensity?

I do not believe lure usage amounts are all that important , use what you want.
Subtle is worked ahead of flashy unnatural looking set,
Dirt hole made in a natural way is no more different to a coyote than anything else in his world imo.
A flat set is just easier quicker to make and is mostly I what I use.
With a dirt hole throwed in for something else.
Some coyote are just strange but they can be caught.

As Red stated a natural dirt hole seems to get the most reaction from the "average" coyote for me. I also learned on flat sets, if you put the lure or bait deep in a clump of taller grass or some kind of taller thicker stuff the average coyote in my area will work harder to get it and show more interest than just putting it under a lip of a cow pie , rock or something that's more out in the open. And yes moving a object to a new spot or bring it into they area seems to put them in high alert. As far as lures I've found if it's a lure that they really want to get to, it doesn't matter if u put a little or a lot they are going to try to get to it. Some lures only hold their interest for a little bit and with those too much may satisfy their curiosity from a distance. Which I've always been in the use little camp until I started testing lures. But once again if one really wants to get better you need to get out there and ask the coyotes.

Good lure/urine doesn't need relured. Iv'e seen sets worked hard in March when I go over my line to make sure I didnt forget equipment that were made in November. Subtle flat sets get worked harder than dirt holes to a point I don't dig many. If I see signs of avoidence I may add a different smell to create more Intruege. The ONLY reason dirtholes catch more fur is that;s what everyone on the planet uses!!

Common sense catches alot of fur..
Pay homage to all you harvest..

When I bought all my bait and lure I really skimped on its application.

Itty bitty dabs of lure, teaspoon of bait at best.

Than I started making my own stuff and stopped worrying about the amount I used.

Good smear of lure, heaping tablespoons of bait.

Caught more coyotes too.

I don’t like “loud” stuff. Most of the stuff I make is mild. Even when it’s cold. The only time I use a skunky “long call” type lure is for cat sets.

In my experience, obscenely loud smells are how you get short worked sets and tracks just outside the jaws.

I’d rather have a large amount of mild smell than a small amount of loud smell.

Would one of you describe your natural dirt hole or even picture. Would like to compare it to my sets
Thanks J

I noticed when I returned to wy to trap coyote , I would go to most locations I trapped the year before, my dog would walk right up to scented spot, where lure was last year, good lure lasts
