I used one yesterday for the first time. Pretty awesome! I live in Alaska, so I had to push through the frozen ground, then it got soft after that. Anyone else use them? Pros? Cons? I made my own cable anchors attached to the pogo ends. Attached them to some MB550's for Lynx.

Been using them exclusively since I started. I haven't had an issue. Biggest plus is they are really cheap so if they don't wanna come out, I don't loose much. Washer, j hook, cable and 2 ferrules. Not a huge loss.

Only time I don't use them is when there's rock and I can't get one in. But in that case nothing is going in... really soft ground you may wanna make them longer and/or use bigger washers.

Hmmmmm, not what I was expecting this conversation to be about, but thanks for the image of you hopping around on a pogo stick in the snow.

If the ground is not frozen I will use them. But driving a washer through a pilot hole in frozen ground makes a curled washer that doesn't grab (I use smaller washers than most). Like sending a washer through a steel pipe when winter hits here. If the frost is only 2-3:" then I can use them but by 4" I am deforming the washer too much for my liking so I use other anchor types. My take on it........P.S. I skip the swivel rivet (J-Hook) and use a cotter key --- my tip for the day. the mike

Pogo’s are all I’ve ever used since giving the rebar a fling down thru the woods.

If ground is frozen a 9/16 drill bit will cut right thru the frozen part.

But then again, I suppose, everything is frozen in Alaska.

I sucked it up and bought one of the red handled heavy duty drivers.

I've busted off half the handle...but that was a bad hammer strike lol. The tip itself still is going strong. I've bought knock offs and they didn't work nearly as well...mine is fairly thick. 3/8" I'd guess? The ones I broke we're thinner...1/4" I'd guess. The slots would separate and sheer off.

Forgot about real frozen ground. I do carry a piece of rebar for that to bust out a pilot hole. If it's frozen deep.....I don't know if any cable stake will work properly. If you can't get the stake to rotate, there's a good chance it'll come back up easily. I have bent a few washers hitting rock and they wouldn't rotate and "catch". When I'm done driving it, I give it a good tug straight up....you should feel the washer rotate and bite...if it doesn't, it'll come up fairly easy.

Been using the pogo system for 20+ years and busted up 3 drivers. Got them all welded up this fall, but since I started drilling pilot holes now there is much less pounding. Most can be pushed in by hand.

Wife,

Can cotter keys hold up to coyotes?

Are cotter keys less expensive than j-hooks?

Never too old to learn

Cotter keys (large enough diameter) work and held up for me but that is totally dependent on the soil type and moisture content (and temp). This is silty, clay, loam (loess soil, pronounced luss) When it freezes over 2-3" forget the pogo here as the washer takes the deformed shape of the pilot hole (you either drilled or pounded with your driver). Up to that 2" (maybe 3") frost depth they work good here but after that you need something heavier to get in the ground. I use pilot holes for about everything this time of year, also a lot of old wooden fence posts as drags as an 8' X 6" dia. in this farm country, slows a coyote down enough to find him pretty easy for an old guy like me. the mike
