When you bleach skulls, do you use the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or more concentrated?

The 3% will work, just takes longer. For an occasional skull, it is fine. If you are going to be doing a lot of skull, a higher concentration is a better choice IMO but the stronger stuff comes with a set of safety issues as well. The Taxidermy.net forum on Skull and Skeletons has a wealth of information about hydrogen peroxide and skull cleaning.

I have a couple deer and a few beaver to bleach so not to much. The 3% is dirt cheap so I was just wondering if it would work.

RKH, what you refer to is 40 Volume, it is actually 12% concentration. Will burn you skin if not handled properly.

I have used up to a 35% concentration for several years. It has to be handled with much respect or or it can cause serious problems.

I watched a you tube video awhile back and I think the guy was using 3% but he had it boiling and was carefully ladling the solution over the top of the skull being careful to keep it off the antlers. I've never done this before so I figured I would give it a shot this summer. I need to get the freezer cleaned out a little and I've been meaning to try it out on a couple basket racks I've gotten from the past few years. I figured I would buy a big plastic tote or garbage can, drill a few holes, stick the skulls in and let the flies do the work for a couple weeks. With them in a garbage can, the sun won't bleach the antlers.

I always use the 3% stuff. After I simmer all the meat etc off the skull in a mix of water, borax, and dawn dish soap, I change the water and then simmer for a couple hours in peroxide, borax and water. The skull dries nice and white. If it's a sunny day, it seems to get whiter faster if you put the skull in the a sunny location(sunny window) to dry.

Good luck and post some pics of yur results.

3% works fine, just takes longer. But it's much cheaper and easier/safer to use.
Boiling with peroxide does nothing other than decompose the peroxide. Don't do it.

Go down to your local pool and spa store and buy a gallon of oxidizer. It is 27% I believe. About $18-20. It will burn you. Mix it with water or use straight. 8 parts of water to one of oxidizer will give you 9 gallons of 3%. I use it for many different things. Even cut it down to 1 1/2% for other jobs. Just mix a little at a time for the job at hand.

i go to sallys beauty and get the 40% volume developer and then get a package of the bleaching/highlighting powder mix that up and use a paint brush to apply it to the skull. You can use a hair dryer to heat the solution on the skull and make it work faster. After an hour or two rinse it off, and i use dawn and a toothbrush to scrub off all the bleach and if you missed any pieces of meat it should easily brush off after using the bleaching stuff. If you are confused about what to buy just ask the lady behind the counter and tell her you need the stuff that is strong enough noone should put it in their hair.
3% peroxide wont do anything. Its not strong enough. I had some 50% peroxide that is used in paper mills, that stuff you can just paint on and sit in the sun for a bit and works, but i doubt anyone can get that unless you work in a place that uses it. Its dangerous to use and will burn you on contact.
Using the sallys bleaching stuff i have bleached skulls that people have found in the woods that have completely rotted and the bone was brown. It was a stankin mess but it bleached right back out and the guy was very pleased.

Again, 3% absolutely will work the same.

Why do they put hydrogen peroxide in brown bottles???
It's because sun light neutralizes it. Don't put the skulls in the sun. Warm maybe but not the sun.
When it looks like the peroxide is done working don't just wash it off. Get some hot tap water ( not boiling ) and soak the skull for a little longer in it. The oxygen in the water will excite the peroxide again, go to bubbling and working again and the heat will help float more of the oil out.
3% will work just fine on teeth, claws and smaller thinner bone/skulls. Bigger or more oily bone needs stronger mixes or longer times.

Volume 40 developer mixed with basic white powder. Mix to consistency of mayonnaise, brush on, wrap skull in aluminum foil, leave 12-24 hours, wash off with water. I’ve done a pile of deer, boar, bear, sheep/goats, and smaller skulls. It whitens them nicely and does not make them brittle.

Soaking deer and small mammal skulls in the 3% will do just fine and will also help with the odor from the tissue you can't really get out of the nasal cavity. The more light you keep away from the peroxide the better, keep the container your using in a black trash bag. Peroxide is not a degreaser and does nothing to degrease the larger skulls like bear and hogs. Those take months of heating in a soap solution to degrease properly.

I've used 3% H.P. with oxyclean added. Works well.
