Guys I have a go under but nothing for them to entangle. I have run several extensions to preserve the spot in hopes a coyote will get way out from the set and entangled. I want to preserve the spot and not ruin the natural undergrowth creating the funnel. But there is another theory. Should I keep the snare shorter an introduce a kill pole. Or a fence post for the coyote to wrap around? Thanks

Kill stick will do the job.

Kirby it depends on how high the fence is, if its a game fence 10' + a 8'-10' snare would be fine that by itself will help keep the cross under in good shape. Or just set your snares a short ways away in the trail would do the same.

I have had 2 chewouts/ twist outs and both involved a steel post I put in hoping they would wrap around it. I staked the snare in ground and put post opposite from stake. When I looked at set closer after loss, side of stake was polished, like they wore snare on stake till it gave. Maybe I would put stake and post right next to each other if I had to do it again?
Now I made a bunch of the kill poles based off the design in the archive section and have had better luck so far. My vote would be a kill stake and plan on moving the snare a little bit after catch.

Like didit, I've have had a few losses using a steel kill pole. In your situation could you do something in the line of a drownding cable to get it away from the set and perhaps towards some entanglement? I know it would involve a bit more site prep but might save the coyote from destroying the original site. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have had good luck and poor luck hanging snares in the fences. My opinion is that if you are going to do this you need short snares and anchor them as high as you can. I use snares that are 24" long through 72" long. All depends on the circumstance. I try to anchor them so if I connect the animal can not lay completely down. If that cable is to long a coyote will roll and chew on the cable especially if it isn't neck caught. This is just my experience.

Are Ram Snares legal in your area? They preserve the location better than anything I have tried in the snare world (and I have been trying locks, extensions, kill poles, different cable, etc., since the mid 70's).

Run a slide wire.

For the guys running kill poles and having issues, where are you placing the pole in relation to the anchor point of the snare?

If that question is towards me, I was setting the snare and anchoring it in the ground,
I put a 6’ T post in the ground, but the sign told me the coyote went around pole nd used it as leverage to work the snare- he never made a complete wrap around the post and eventually the snare gave way.
Now I copied the one in the archives to a T and haven’t had any issues, plus I don’t need to carry so much crap to make a set, just the killpole, snare and post pounder and I’m good to go
Hope this helps

The distance from the anchor pole and the length of the snare with an animal in it are critical for a kill stake to work properly.Optimal is around 2/3 for guaranteed wrap up.

I forgot to mention one important detail I'm using very aggressive snare locks with a 25 lb kill spring with either 1/16" or 5/64 cable which ever I feel is best for the location I'm dealing with at that time.
Where a kill pole isn't really required but is just one more thing to pack to a set.

So you guys use a lot of 1/16 cable in wooded areas for coyotes aa well as fence lines? I like the perfect round loop 5/64 makes and doesnt seem to kink near as bad as 1/16.

Thanks

I use 5/64s 100% I have caught a lot of different critters with this size. I do have some 3/32 cables but purchased them when we had our couple of years of wolf seasons. Haven't put them out since.

I tried some 5\64 for cats once.I found they didn't go down as quick as with the 1/16.

I prefer a longer snare. Good run to set the lock and just about all are dead without much sign of struggle.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.
