Do fur buyers want to have the front legs flesh side out and hidden under the turn hide or do they want them also turned fur side out ?

When selling through the auction houses the front legs of fur out species should be left inside when re-boarded fur-out.

What bctomcat said. But I would cut off the front legs at the elbow. No need to mess with the whole leg.

The armpits( legpits?) are subject to taint, but the auctions want the legs in so the hides are less prone to tearing damage. Make sure that legs are dry before turning or give them a little borax. If you don't think leaving legs inside is a taint problem, check out the new instructions for handling marten on the FHA website. Now they want you to pin them out to dry prior to turning. If there is swelling in the leg or armpit area this can be the last place a hide dries.

" Pin out the front legs using cardboard. This is to allow the legs to dry before turning the pelt. Make sure the legs are dry before turning and leave them inside. This helps prevent damage during the drumming process."

I dry my skins horizontal. The front legs hang straight down and dry perfectly with the rest of the pelt. After turning they lay flat along the belly of the pelt inside.

Cut the freakin legs off at the elbow then these issues go away. You can still hang them like boco does and that will take care of what's left. Anyway that's how I do It.

On bobcats I split and skin out to the toes on the front legs and do the cardboard trick and sometimes will use half of a plastic coat hanger in each leg to help spread the leg hole open to aid in drying it evenly borax is your friend now when it's flesh side out don't let it get to dry before turning the pelt fur side out so it doesn't tear . If for what ever reason it does use a damp bath towel wrap the pelt until it's soft enough to turn. Then use the plastic hanger pieces to allow air flow and the legs hang down along the belly.

That's what I do - and just move them forward towards the head inside the the pelt. Pin the ears forward and let 'er hang.

Lot of usable fur on the front legs of a cat.I leave em.And use em.No problem when left inside after turning. I don't split them until after they are tanned. They also add some nice weight(heft) to the pelt if you are sending it to auction.[Linked Image]
