Quick link, large. Make sure you tighten with a wrench when you attach to earth anchor

I use a J-hook off the last swivel so I get both swivel points, then a link or two of chain, then a Quick link to the anchor (either earth anchor or drag). If you connect the QL to the swivel, you lose one swivel point.

Heavy duty J hooks all the way to the cable stake. Have not had an issue out of the last 3 to 400 coyote.

2 links of chain on the terminal swivel on the trap chain. Then hook up the quick link to your staking device. No loss of swiveling when done like this.
I want the option to remove my trap from that location with a minimum of hassle. And you can't do that with a J hook. I guess you could carry a J hook tool but then that J hook once removed is junk. And what about those that weld their J hooks closed.
Quick links all the way.

That's a good idea Beav

All mb550 traps and dog proof traps have last swivel J hook plus 3 links of chain plus 3/16” quick link. Every single stake anchor and double stake anchor has j hook with 3 links of chain. Chain stakes simply connect as is. Cable stakes have the top 6” of chain. If I cut the cable, I retrieve the thimble and chain. Use anchor method as desired. Always tighten the quicklink with a wrench and screwdriver.

I have some Berkshire cable stakes that I am using up. They hold well but don’t survive pulling to reuse so I always snip the cable.

It's not the weight Its the fooling around removing them then. Like I said they are toast once removed.

But If J hooks work for you then that's the way to go. We are just giving the poster other options.

I did catch a coyote yesterday and I used a wrench and my stake to tighten the quick link. But when removing the snare from the anchor point the quick link was only finger tight.
It must have something to do with all the movement and strain on the quick link with a coyote working on the end of a 6' cable. I have yet to see that on a foot hold set up where your short chained.

That's great set up.

I have tried both on Yote sets. like beav said heavy duty J hooks are the way to go. Quick links get annoying to deal with frozen fingers and sometimes they are frozen up to undo. J hooks are cheap and easy.

I believe Beav advocates the use of quick links, but suggested the use of a j hook to attach two links of chain to the last sweval and the chain link attached to the quick link to maintain the function of the last sweval
