What the proper way to clean up and preserve on of these old traps?

Remove loose rust and dirt with soapy warm water. Use an old toothbrush to clean in the tight spaces. Dry thoroughly. And you are good to go.

Do not clean to bare metal

Do not use chemicals, including vinegar

Do not use mechanical means

Do not dye, dip, paint.

Old traps should have tight rust. It is called patina
