I don't post much on here but thought ya'll would get a kick out of this. We were forecasted for roughly 6" of snow yesterday and today. I had the bright idea that I'd cover about 50 sets with trash bags, with a flag, so when it quit, I'd just pull the trash bags off and voila, I'd have open sets for eye appeal for the next few days before it melted off. Well I covered them yesterday and added a flag so I'd find them. We only got 2" of snow then ice on top of that. The weather was supposed to break this afternoon so I waited a while before checking. I did carry all my gear just in case. The first is a pick of what they all looked like before the snow. I was surprised when I pulled up and had one. Coyotes will certainly make you scratch your head. The before and after are not the same set but they were all covered like that one. You can see the flag in the after pic. Only thing I can figure is he worked the set after there was enough snow to cover tge bag.

I think that the creative ideas that people, not only trappers, come up with to solve any issue. That's why I'm always asking questions as well as reading.

Good job.

I start my week trapping vacation this Friday. Friday is going to be 60 with forecast calling for thunderstorms Friday afternoon, getting colder Saturday with rain switching to snow then single digit temps Saturday night. Not getting above freezing on Sunday. I haven't figured out how I'm going to handle this yet.

Thats something! So did the plan work when you pulled the trash bags off? Were the sets dry and working?

Yes, it worked. They were dry but I run wax dirt so I did it mainly for eye appeal.

However, I blanked yesterday. There were 2 yotes that moved along my line Sunday night. Both came up to the set within 15', hit the brakes and doubled back. I'm rethinking covering them now. I used to just sweep them off but you have the same amount of disturbance in the snow either way. If I do cover them again, I think it will be with a rigid material because as you pull the bag up, it wants to slide out from under the snow. I'm on the fence right now about covering them.

The 2 refusals I had could be old dogs that I've crossed paths with before but who knows. They make you wonder for sure. I had a bobtailed mangey male on video Friday stradle and pee on a dirt hole. He never worked the set. Had him Saturday in a dirt hole about a 1/4 mile away.

Yes I have but I'll just leave those sets and set a different type set in the general area. May pick those up between now and then at a different location anyway. Shoot, they may have a different mindset the next time through and work those particular sets. Just bought some cable off of Newt and anxious to try it. Never fooled with it before so it will be a learning process but it may help pick up the stubborn ones.

I like this idea. Midwest trapping weather can be a nightmare.

This would be a great use for all the corrugated plastic political signs that seem to almost constantly everywhere these days, lol.

The only negative I see, is that traditionally before a storm hits is when I make my biggest catches. I’d hate think I just put my entire line out of commission on what could be an epic catch nite.

I did very well the previous night. That snow was supposed to and started about lunch that day. However, could have picked a couple more. I'm still on the fence. Thanks though for the insight
