Question on collecting urine . . . what kind of filter should I pour it through to clean out any food particles, dirt, etc? I have a pen with a drip pan setup, but the urine has some stuff in it. The coyotes are meat fed only, so this is going be more dirt and scat that may get it. I am going to make a polyfill filter to put in the drain pipe to put inline before it hits the bottle, but after so, should i pour it back through a coffee filter, or just a wire strainer? Could I be affecting the quality of the urine by straining it through something as small as a coffee filter?

I’ve found it is very hard to strain any amounts of urine through a coffee filter. I strain through a fine wire screen and then filter through some folded up cheesecloth.

Thanks, appreciate the insight. Going to strain and then freeze to concentrate

^^yep, I'm another cheese cloth guy.

your polyfill may clog fast but only time will tell, might need to cheesecloth the pipe as well...plus polyfill absorbs a lot and will need squeezed out I'd imagine.

You are right, i put a small bit of poly fill to catch any big waste or ticks, etc. It seems to hold a lot of liquid. Think I'll change up to a screen ans some inline cheesecloth. Might have to strain back through the cheesecloth a few times if necessary

Thanks

I have used filters for years for a large operation when I did it years back. I now use paint thinner/funnels that I get from a local Napa store. You can probably buy them on line. They have a very fine mesh in the small funnel bottom. If you have any debris or solids it will catch it.

I place the funnel filter into the appropriate sized funnel to hold it in place while filtering/straining.

Thanks Bob, appreciate it. I understand clean urine will last indefinitely, if stored in a clean high quality plastic, or glass container. Any need to freeze it down and thaw out to remove some of the water content to make it more concentrated? I have a small pen, collecting for myself and some trapping friends, so this won't be big scale. Feeding all meat.

I have done the freeze out in years past but dont find I need to do that with urine that is already good. It will certainly provide you with a more concentrated product and lower freezing point.
