For hanging animals in the round, why do they say to hang by the bag leg? What would be so bad about securing it by the front leg?

You want all the guts to settle in the chest cavity, especially on animals that are susceptible to green belly- i.e.; yotes. Same concept when placing rats on their back

And your reason as to why your hanging these critters. If your hanging to dry then I would hang by a front foot.
This green belly thing Is not as a big deal as some would make It out to be. A little bleach will kill the bacteria and your good to go. Or If It's not to bad don't worry about It.

^^^^^^^^^^^^It is not a serious defect until it turns really dark brown or black^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I would rather prevent it, than treat it- no better method than skinning as soon as you can

Skinning as soon as possible is always a good plan but, some animals skin easier after being hung for a day or two. Green belly often occurs in a freshly caught animal even in cold weather but this day or two time period of hanging at a 50-60F temperature has posed no problems for me. Just treat the "green" belly as previously stated.

I'm not fond of the smell myself. The color is not unpleasant. smile

I'd prevent it if I could. JMHO

All animals skin better after hanging for a day or two in the cool.Of course if your trapping in a warm climate, and using lethal sets, you wont have the luxury of hanging your fur for a couple days.
If you cant stand a bit of green belly smell your definitely in the wrong line of work. There is a lot of stuff related to trapping that smell a lot worse.

I have bought and been given coyotes that have been dead for way too long. I have had yotes that were green everywhere. Most of these have bazooka holes in them and need to be washed. It is surprising, but most of the green will wash out of the skin when you flesh and wash. Never have lost one and I know some have been dead for way too long! Like most things, scrape it clean, but don't keep going over it , get under the fat and meat and get it in a swipe or two. Overscraping will cause more slippage than most other things! Yep, they stink, but what doesn't in the trapping game!

Yep, I have skinned cats that were past green that were blue. Not mine of course. One of those smells you can't seem to get out of your mind.

Green belly stinks??
Ya' gotta be kid'n me!!
Who else but a trapper would spend hard earned money on pee and an assortment of other nauseous smelling things? (Except beaver castor...)

Or ones that want to be trappers that waste all that money to catch a handful of fur.

X2 on hanging from the back leg or legs. Coyotes and cats bellies go green pretty fast.
