I've been mostly a lurker here, but I've learned a lot by reading everyone's posts. Being a rookie trapper, and this being my first season, I've needed a lot of help. Thanks to forums like this one, and the generosity of experienced trappers helping out rookies like me, things are easier than they would be if I was just trying to figure it all out on my own.
I've have been using well hidden trail cameras to help me see what I'm doing wrong. Seeing as how it has taken me several weeks of trying in order to get my first coyote, I am obviously a slow learner. grin

On my trap check yesterday I finally got my first coyote. A small female. The catch was caught on video, but so was an attack on her 30 minutes later. the dominant pair in the neighborhood showed up to give her a beating. She fended them off, and sent them packing. She had a few wounds on her from the attack but there was blood outside the catch circle too, so the other ones didn't get away scot-free either.

Thought you might be interested in seeing the video.

Joe

Awesome. I think it happens a lot more than we realize. Also shows the benefits to multiple sets.

First off that`s some really great footage. Two things you should learn from that video is that you need a deeper hole or some thing because I seen them get something and eat it without getting caught. I also noticed they did it from a couple different directions. You only want to give them one direction to come over the trap to get anything. You do that by making the hole at an angle away from your trap. The other thing is to have another trap set close by.

Had one get attacked by 2 a few years ago. I was bow hunting about 300 yards away on same woodline. Heard the whining and yelping. Had two comer run past me. They ran back down about 5 minutes later. Then came past me again When I finished deer hunting I went down woodline to check my traps and had a yote in one. She had fresh bites on her flanks

That's a cool video thank you for sharing

Probably litter mates trying to move up the pecking order....looks like they left her alone after she showed her belly. I've caught them with fresh wounds, eyes missing chewed up pretty bad.

What brand camera are you using. I have tried that and when the cam turns on the coyotes are gone

Wow that is some great footage! Congrats on the coyote. Likes been said before "if the location is good for one set it's good for two or three. As you gain experience you'll find them hot spots you'll want to have two or three sets at. Keep at it and you'll catch a double some day.

There are times when a coyote gets caught and the other run In to se what has happened. Then the trapped coyote gets excited and may bite at the others. And that's when the fighting starts. I've seen coyotes and so tore up the weren't worth skinning.

That s why I always set two traps at a location just far enough apart so they can't get at each other
