Will coyotes come to.an area where a comrade has just been caught or avoid it at all cost. I have a dispatched coyote and am wondering if it's better to get him away from the scene of the crime or leave him for the others to come and check out?

Thanks

I picked up a road killed coyote before season started and tossed it along one of my lines. But a trIl camera on it, and yes coyotes came up and sniffed at it.

But it was from 20 miles away so it was a stranger too

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

I've had coyotes kill and eat other snared coyotes. I also return skinned carcass to my bait stations, where they were caught, and have not seen any evidence that these deter others from checking the site out.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I have seen them do both. Some coyotes will eat their kin, or come and really investigate where a prior catch was made. And then some steer absolutely clear of a catch spot. No set rule, they are individuals.

This ^^^^. I also snare and have this year caught 4 coyotes in same set if it isnt really badly disturbed ...however , Ive also had coyotes steer clear around a spot where one was caught so you never know . As for adding their carcass to the bait pile , Ive had too much trouble with eagles and ravens eating good coyotes caught away from the pile to start adding them to the pile and teaching them to do it . Only thing worse than a chew out is finding a $150 bill laying there torn to pieces after the birds have had their lunch from him .

Dead coyotes never been a big producer for me. And I’ve tried and tried and tried.

Usually the opposite. You get ONE investigation at best, than they avoid the area.

Here’s the problem with coyotes checking out dead coyotes. Some will check them out, but they do so on high alert. If you believe a coyote is a neophobic paranoid, they are even more so when checking out dead coyotes. I don’t want my coyotes on high alert. When coyotes are in that frame of mind they shut down.

Trap locations where dispatch yields a lot of blood, hunters shoot the coyote and it lays there dead, etc, never seem to produce as well after like a “clean” location.

Snare locations almost always slow way down after a couple coyotes die there. Go 100-200 yards away and get into em again, but not where the dead were.

I go to great lengths to keep my carcass dumps far far away from places I’ve got gear out in.

Ogorman says yes. Good enough for me. I feel it depends on the population. When low it seems they are much more apt to save thier skin. Remake the set and add another on the outside downwind edge is how I play it.

I've had no luck using coyote carcasses on bait piles. But I do use them to keep eagles and other birds away from my snared coyote. I put them out in an open area away from my snares..
But I have had luck at catch sites. I just set farther up the trail on both sides of the catch circle if possible. I've had quite a few figure eights. If lots of blood or body fluids I try and get rid of most of it or keep my snares 10' or so away from catch areas if possible. I also double and triple set trails. I haven't missed many coyote and doubles are great.
But when I've reset in catch sites or to close to catch circles I do get knock downs or misses because I believe their on high alert or their noses are to the ground investigating. Same as trailheads or where trails start/end in an open area. I set a ways in.
I also think that catch circles/sites would be great for setting a foothold. I'm just not there yet with footholds.

Will coyotes work as a bait pile for cats?
